Drum brake painting

Ok so i'm thinking of painting the rear drum brakes on my 55SX when I get my new rims fitted, maybe a gold or yellow. Can anybody recommend a good paint and has anybody had experiences painting their drum brakes?

Pics would be nice too.

Re: Drum brake painting

plenty of options.powdercoating is popular or a high temp paint could be used.

think some peeps just use hammeritte.

Re: Drum brake painting

I used black Hammerite on mine, it's OK on one side but is flaking a bit on the other. Think its down to me not cleaning them properly before painting (they were brand new drums with that greasy coating).

Re: Drum brake painting

Well they may be drums but you gotta make them look the dogs if you've just put sparkly new rims on.

This is the reason why I was thinking of yellow or gold because IMO this car looks pretty snazzy with the drums painted yellow (or gold can't quite tell).

Re: Drum brake painting

No it looks crap, sorry. I can understand you wanting to make them look presentaable when seen through alloys but they are drums for gods sake, they look better in black and you dont have to keep them so clean if you pic a dark colour.

Re: Drum brake painting

I painted them metallic silver using halfords own brand high temp paint from a spray can and they came out pretty snazzy, I'll post a pic if you like.

I used some hammerite kurust on em first cos they were pretty minging to begin with, propper rusty.

Took me all day like, then used a primer (even though the halfords can tells you not to (whoops!)) just a matt grey hammerite, so did 6 coats in total 1 every 15 mins.

Re: Drum brake painting

Hiya sorry it took so long to get back to you

Up close (blurry I know)

From a distance

Hard to tell with these light levels what it looks like, but it does look smart. Better than the glossy blue/red options halfords have in that brake drum pack.

Paints I used

I actually used a Hammorite primer too in matt grey which was available from halfords down the same aisle (the halfords paint says you dont need to use one though)

I didn't use any lacquer as I think the heat would discolour it. Cost me about £15 altogether for the paints.

I think it looks alright, much better than before at least with the rust.

Re: Drum brake painting

I notice on my friends corsa that his drums / discs haven't rusted at all, look like parched black, I've heard it's possible to treat them by blow torching them and quenching them in motor oil?
