i wonder what is the best way of tackling rust under car

Cut out the bad..and plate it up,

can you weld?

yea i can weld with electrode sticks but that is ****, buddy of mine has gas welding machine

Thats your best bet,
cut all the rot out and weld new in,

spend half aday after,with apaint brush and get it all undersealed,
fiat is rot box so..best off undersealing

thats rly strange i had mot in 21.january 2014 and no one said anything about rust, i didnt see it either, can it be possible it just wasnt enough for them to say anything or that happend in 5 months?

My mk2 was Mot'd six months back,
floor was solid, straight pass on mot,

it was up on lift in garage the other day looking for a knocking noise on back wheel,
noticed hole in floor near sill, big enough to post a cig packet through,

so yeah they can rot in very little time,
its welded up now but will be getting painted up every 6mths or so underneath,

quite interesting these metal eating animals

Learn to MIG -- it's easier than stick Arc. Don't plate, butt!

just order some new floor panels much easier

they are good quality

A whole new pile of rust you mean lol.

Here's a top tip with ramps. Drive the car up as normal. Jack the car off one ramp and turn it the other way round.



This is a damn sight safer than axle stands and you can get to where you are welding a lot easier.

When you cut a section out make a plate slightly bigger so you can lap weld inside first. Then lap weld underneath. You will find it a lot cleaner and quicker than trying to butt/seam weld wafer thin metal together.

But think of the extra weight!

Generally, I don't like lap welds. But they're a great improvement on plating!

anyone ever used Hammerite 'direct-to-rust' or similar stuff? got a nice layer of brown all over the underside of my Mk1 that i've been meaning to clean up for a while, hopefully delay the whole welding malarkey for a little while at least

but the real question is, would this fail mot?

Depends if the tester went to specsavers.........

some mot guys are rly ****ed up, they will fail u for every small abnormality on da car
