I have a 1995 Punto 55SX and whilst driving today I lost all power and the Fuel Injection warning light came on. I believe it is suffering from fuel starvation and it will no longer go above 3000 revs and sounds like a lawnmower. When in neutral the whole car shakes quite viscously. Not all the cylinders are firing up apparently. Tried using some injection cleaner to no avail, and once I had come back from a short drive to get it through the engine when I opened the door there was a smell of hot metal and looking under the car the catalytic converter was glowing bright orange - obviously very hot! The ignition leads and spark plugs were replaced in June.
Can anyone offer any help with this at all???

Almost certainly a coil - but it might be worth changing the plugs first:
one plug failure will pump unburnt air/fuel mixture straight out, the lambda sensor will see this and the ECU will try and back off the mixture to lean it out, but can't as the mixture is not being used in the engine - warning light on.

The catalytic converter is now destroying itself by burning this mixture: don't drive it - they cost too much.

All the above times 2 if you have a coil failure.
