To take a power washer to spray the engine compartment?

I was gonna clean it out cos there's quite a build up of some kinda silt, salt/general crap on top of the engine and surrounding areas.

I was gonna take a poly bag and cover up the alternator and battery but anything else I should be aware of, is this a wise thing to do?

i do it all the time dont cover nothing, i get no problems,

I been pondering on this for ages, I can see how its safe, as if water gets int he ECU or spark plugs etc battery?

If I did do it, id cover ECU, Dizzy , Alternator, etc

i generally spray from the bootom from the lance but not the top

nope

shouldn't you steam clean it? Means that your using the bear minimum amount of water and most of it evaporates so water isn't left lying around in the engine bay.

Yeah but dave there is a difference between rain water from the bottom and sides, compared to a jet washer blasting it

yeah i know rain water goes where it wants, jet wash you can point away from bits you dont want to wet

I wouldn't risk it. I've hosepiped mine a few times along with halford engine degreaser. I didn't like doing that either.

Watch out for your lights (MK2) mine managed to fill up, fish tank style..

If I was doing round head gasget area etc, should I have concernd about the Alternator ?

You guys are brave - I wouldn't attempt to pressure wash mine....each to their own, I suppose.
