Unhappy broken into - drivers door lock crippled

I was broken into earlier tonight in Sheffield. They wedged something into the drivers side lock assuming the fascia for the cd player would be in the boot - and it was. That, along with my fcuk bag, fcuk jacket, satellite navigation, and some hugo boss £115 sunglasses. ******s.

Anyway, back to the point. The bodywork around the lock is a little deformed, and I'm unable to use the door on the drivers side. I can, though, lock the doors and open them using the passenger side so can still use the vehicle. Am I able to get a new lock ONLY for the drivers side? Or do I need to get ALL the locks replaced on the car (it has central locking). I don't mind having to have another key, I just need the cheapest fix really cos I'm off to uni in september so cannot afford an expensive solution. And how much will this cost?

Moral of the story: avoid the car park off division street in sheffield, and don't leave ANYTHING in the boot because people might be watching.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your help.

Re: broken into - drivers door lock crippled

if your happy with two keys then i dont see why you cant get another lock. dont knw fiats system but do you have a security code or something which may allow a new lock to be purchases to go with the existing locks.

other option is to get one of the fiat remote locking kits of ebay and forget about the drivers lock,or an alrm with remote locking if you dont have one.

sucks i know,my cinq has a heavily damaged passenger lock for the same reason

Re: broken into - drivers door lock crippled

I personally would have it delocked and get remote locking. I know it costs more than getting a new lock but if they have done it once then its likely to happen again, I wouldn't chance it.

Re: broken into - drivers door lock crippled

My Punto has a passenger lock which is now filled in with "steel putty" epoxy resin type stuff, after some c**t broke into it (also in Sheffield ) and nicked my speakers. It was meant to be just a temporary fix, as the busted lock could be popped open with a screwdriver, but it's been like that for 2 years now... it's probably worth your while filling your broken lock in until you get it replaced as a broken lock is an easy target for thieving scum.

You should be able to get a replacement lock barrel from a scrap car, just make sure you get the key that goes with it and a Haynes manual should tell you how to fit it.

I hate the little sh..s who do this - luv to catch them at it. I had a brand new Seicento Sporting a while back, parked it and went for a meal. Came back and found the driver's door lock drilled out. New new door required and 3 days old.

Unhappy Re: broken into - drivers door lock crippled

Thanks for all your replies, it makes it a tad easier knowing I'm not the only one going through this. It couldn't have come at a worse time either with my trying to save some cash for Uni.

Anyway, I went to see the Fiat man today, who told me I could get a new lock for about £30 for the drivers side, but this would mean having another key. They recommended having a new lock set for the whole car which was ~ £65, but with labour on top this is gonna cost me about £190.

There's no way I'll be able to fit it myself though, and they need to do their stuff with the red key I have. I'm looking for a cheaper option but don't see one at the minute. I'm gonna ask them to push out the dent around the lock too so it doesn't look so deformed, but not sure if they'll do it. I'm booked in for Wednesday so hopefully after that I can forget about the whole mess.

I'm just going to leave nothing in my car in future, and when I park up in an unsecure car park I'm gonna swing the back seat down so the ****s can see there's nothing worth stealing. What a ****ing stupid world we live in.

Anyway, I'll be keeping an eye out for my items on eBay over the next few weeks in the meagre hope of finding out who did this. I don't know how much stuff gets on there, but the police are being somewhat useless in all of this. My SatNav PDA had my name and address on it - does anyone ever get their stuff back? Or should I wave goodbye to it all for good?

Re: broken into - drivers door lock crippled

If you get a lock from a scrappie, it's possible to get a lock smith to grind the gates down to fit your existing key. Cost like £20 for the locksmith.

Happened to me but they didn't gain access to the vehicle. There's a steel plate inside the door which is supposed to stop them from being able to tilt the lock and affecting the central locking, but it's a poor design and the whole door will buckle before the plate has any effect.

It's fairly easy to fit your own lock. Go from the inside and remove the padding/inlay from your door.

Re: broken into - drivers door lock crippled

i suggest you put the £190 towards an alarm with remote locking. get a lock from the scrappies and if theres no key swap it with your pasenger side lock so you can open the door on your side with a key if need be.

swapping locks over is an easy job,as is filing down the lock fingers to fit another key though it makes the lock less discriminating over keys

think paying £190 is a false economy as it does nothing to deter future break ins. i know the alarm doesnt stop them grinding the lock but its less likely to happen than without a lock.

Re: broken into - drivers door lock crippled

I was told I can't switch the passenger/driver locks because they are "sided" or something. I've decided to get the new locks, and fit an alarm that my colleague's very kindly giving to me. I know the alarm won't kick in until someone actually opens the door (it's voltage based when the courtesy light comes on), but it's better than nothing.

I'll just leave nothing in the car, and make it pretty obvious by making everything visible. I think that's the only way in the long run, because people will just break a window if they even suspect there's something in there.

I could scream

Re: broken into - drivers door lock crippled

tbh 190£ for a new lock set + fitting sounds fairly cheap, they were quoting me close to 300 for doing it around here, rip off bastard dealers.

Quoted £75 for lock set, £65 for encoding the immobiliser to the new key's transponder and about another £150 for fitting the 4 locks.

Good old Reg Vardy/Benfield price matching. Have settled with my 2 keys for quite a while now.

You just going through an independant garage?

If I was you mind, depending on how much you save, I'd do the installation myself.

This is through AutoWorld Fiat in Chesterfield, an authorised dealer. They've always seemed pretty good with me actually, and just told me to bring my red key in when I take the car tomorrow.

They did try to quote of £50 to reform the door around the lock, but I persuaded them to press it back out when theyr'e doing the fitting for free.

Oh, and if anyone's reading this in Sheffield who might know the bastards who nicked my stuff, tell them I want my ****ing bag and jacket back!!!!! ****ing bastard ******s.

I'll post his old ugly dumb ass on here it really is quite shocking how a old dude could do that.

Re: broken into - drivers door lock crippled

Just a quick question - where do I get personal insurance from that covers stuff I take out with my in my car? I need something (separate from my car insurance) so that I can be reimbursed if anything like this happens again.
