is it revvin really high if so sounds like it could be the idle sensor

If it's hunting.. nearly stalling and then recovering again, it could be the lamda sensor is FUBAR'd. Look in the exhaust.. if it's very black and sooty then it backs that up.

I also had this happen on my Punto after I changed the engine and it turned out that I had no slack in the throttle cable when It was at idle and it seemed that this was messing up the idling and it rev'd high low just as you described. After I put some slack in the cable using the adjuster it fixed it straight away - might be worth a quick check it's a quick and free fix if it is this.
