iv got a mk1 fiat punto and when i fill up it just clicks off and petrol comes flushing out and just sits in the filler neck and out of the breather pipe, after pulling away it got a very strong smell of petrol for around 5 min, iv changed the petrol filter and looked at the petrol pump which seems ok, the filler neck breather pipe isnt blocked as can blow down it, iv looked and cleaned the filler neck pipes and made sure there isnt on bends in it, i just dont know what it could be?

ps. iv tried everything at the station but nothin works

Hi,
hard to diagnose without seeing your car - but the MK1's were "fussy" about this kind of thing.. I think the "crank" / bend on UK fuel nozzles disagrees with the italian designed filler neck assembly,
( upside down nozzle - with the trigger body of it resting into the "fold of the bodywork and filler flap" seemed the best - but could only fill to 1/2 a tank at some garages..!!,
not quite as bad on later punto and other FIATS in our fleet,
I hope that helps a little..,
Charlie

hey guys thanks for your reply, will try the upside down trick tomoz mornin, its a great looked after car but just this one thing is buggin me lol, i went for a new filler neck but cant seem to find any, scrap yards and ebay they all seem to be for mk2

just got back from the station and tried the upside down trick but no trick happened it still came floodin out, someone told me to check the breather valve but where bouts is this?

Try to fill it with a petrol can as you can control the flow. I sound to me that you may have a blockage there. Try to to push some long flexible road trough the filler with care. Maybe the blockage is high up and you will notice soon enough.

when i fill mine at petrol station i have to turn the nosel sideways. I find my car easier to fill if i park the car at a pump the opposite side of car and pull the hose around to put fuel in. If i angle it normally the fule hose just keeps clicking off until i find the right position hope this kinda helps

I agree also with the comments above.
My car has always been tricky to fuel, I try to deliver the fuel at a slow steady rate but sometimes it inevitably goes to waste.
I have found that some pumps at some garages allow the fuel to be delivered more slowly - this is without causing the pump to click off. It might be worth trying different outlets, even if neighbouring pumps have had two visits in the time it takes to fill your tank once!
