Help! My 1996 Mk1 Punto has quite a bit of underbody rust, including one small hole underneath the edge of the car.

What is the best way of sorting this out myself , short of taking it to an expensive metal expert.

Is there some spray I can put on it etc?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Having owned a few cars made in Britain during the 70s and 80s I know this problem well. You can buy rust killing agents that contain phosphoric acid which reacts with the rust (iron oxide) to create iron phosphate a harmless white powder and leaves you with nice clean metal for painting and treating. Red oxide primer/paint is a favourite for this as it stops future rust and also helps kill off anything that's left. Also covering an area with wax oil helps well as stopping further rust.

Obviously where hold have appeared you might need to get someone to weld a patch in.

In these cases a good wire brush is your friend.

Thanks for this. I guess I can get this stuff from Halfords? Is this ok to apply anywhere under the car that is looking brown?

And the best bit is it only reacts with rust all good metal will be left untouched, buying from halfords can be quite expensive for what is generally a very cheep chemical
