hello over these past few months i have noticed that there is a banging noise coming from my back end everytime i hit a speed bump or any sized pothole in the road has anyone else had this and if so what was it reply asap

Try to "hit" the speed bumps slower? Or mite just be your space saver not secure.

cheers lads for the ones that replied with a reasonable answer my local mechanic i use said it could be the rear arms

Could be been the operative word

It could be a Nackered Shock bushing, thats banging, idearly you need to get up on a ramp and start working with a crowbar on bushings
Or getting under the car and replicating the noise by bouncing

A Proper Diagnosis only comes with an observation

ziggy

Strangely my car seem to suffer similar problem. N/S rear seems to make more noise then I expect over bumps and rough surface. No handling issues yet so a bit puzzled. How do we test the rear arms?

as allready said above, put it on a ramp/pit and check for movement with a bar.

hopefully rear of sill solid
jack up on here so wheel clear of ground
grab wheel at a quarter to and a quarter past and pull side to side
if any play youve found your knocking

other problem area is subframe to body has a rubber bush these deteriorate and so cause a banging through the floor

also if car has an antirollbar check compliance bushes make sure they havent spread so you have metal to metal touching under full rebound

not seen many shockers on the mk1 lose their eyes but they did tend to lose their oil quickly once they leaked easily visible if you get down and get under and look though, main thing is oil all the threads and get the crap offthe bolt before you try to remove it or it will lock and then you will have problems its actually better to use a windy gun and just keep going

:)

My money is on trailing arm bushes u can just get a repair kit from eBay 10 pound a side and u may aswell do both at the same time

ive said it before but will say it again i would never faff with those kits but for sanity reasons always bought a recon arm
remember if his car has the antiroill bar fitted the bolts always sheared too so at least he wont worry with a new arm
and i never mentioned the bush fittings into the trailing arms being a pain to fit and it is winter and he wont have the benefit of a nice coodly garage and steam presses:D

I have just done the r/h side arm on my sons and am pleased i brought a replacement/exchange arm as 2 bolts sheared off . After the old arm was returned the cost was £45 .
Son reports handling and ride are now greatly improved , it was discovered on my pre M O T check , the wheel could be moved sideways by 6mm !

Just checked the rear on my car and here is what I found.
Both trailing arms have a bit of play. Also on the side I hear the noise coming from there seem to be some movement in the bush between the subframe and the body. I expect the bush behind the subframe which I can not see easily is a bit worn. I think this may actually cause the noise as when loaded there is no play as the weight of the car makes the subframe sit on the body and no play. But when moving the car over bump there will be a tendency the main body to be pushed up while the subframe is hold down by its weight. When the car settles back the two parts are squeezed together. This process I suspect causes my noise.
Now, it looks like I have to leave with the noise, as it looks a bit hard work to do. Recondition arms, plus all bushes for the whole subframe replaced.

I have a similar issue regarding the banging etc when hitting potholes or any slightly lumpy road surface, I also have the same banging when braking.
If braking to slow down gently to a speed limit the banging is quite bad, if braking harder it seems less so.
After reading through all of the relevent posts on here i think its time to have a look underneath.
Thanks for all the advice posted.
