Technical Punto 75SX - Low Power

Neil - Just read your post ( 5mins after posting exactly the same thing!! )

What has been the outcome of this as my fault is exactly the same as yours. I think the dealers dont really have a clue, but that goes for most garages!

All info would be greatly received :) TY

Reading this message about the stalling problems has reminded me of the same dilemma my wife had with her punto 75 elx before I took hold of it - I took it to a garage who straight away identified one of the ignition coils as the problem. Replacing the coil stopped the engine stalling but the engine is still sluggish as it was before - so it won't cure that problem. Apparently what causes the ignition coils to fail is the plastic cover that fiat use to cover the coils (meant to tidy up the look of the engine compartment) - as no ram air from the grille is allowed to flow over the coils, they become overheated and subsequently fail - much to my surprise the mechanic instantly threw the cover in the bin after replacing the failed coil. Only when I raised an eyebrow did he proceed to explain the situation!

UPDATE & FIXED
Well talk about little faith in Fiat Garages, I had said to them all along, since reading articles on this forum, that I think it was the Lambda Sensor, only to be told that if that failed, the car would drive like a brick in thick mud (very poorly and sluggish). My car was certainly no brick in thick mud. On Friday 10th October, I took it back to Fiat and explained at great length to the Garage Manager exactly what was happening, he came outside and listened to the car giving the exact problem I had reported. He said "Thats not running as it should, there is definitely something wrong, and its not the plug leads", well what would you know, an admission of a problem still there. They replaced the Lambda Sensor and all is now well. Also I did not get charged, which is amasing. So If you have this same problem, try the following;
1. Try and borrow a multimeter to measure the coils, should not be open-circuit on either side, mine was open-circuit on the output (plugs) side. If you cannot do this, find a friendly (not fiat) garage to test your coils. If faulty, change only the faulty one.
2. Attempt to hold the revs at 2,000 and if they rise n fall every 4 or 5 seconds to 2,500 get the garage to see that exact problem.
3. Ask the garage if it is the Lambda Sensor, if they say it isn't, get it in writing.
4. Look in the phone directory for a car auto-electrics sompany, ring and see if they can test a Lambda Sensor, if so take your car to them.

Now my car is all sorted, I have fitted the ECOTEK device, so will let you knnow how it goes.

[:(!] AAARRRGGHHH [:(!] I am now getting very mad with Garages, Mechanics, and my Fiat Punto. I have had 10 other cars in 17 years, my Punto being number 11, and I have never had so many problems in such a short space of time with any of the others [:(!] !!

My latest problem is that I have a strong steering-vibration, when the car was MOT'd, they reported wear on the tyre insides.

They suggested that the Tracking should be 'done.

I have just taken my Punto to my local garage yet again, who now tell me;
"... blah ... |) ... blah ... the Track-Rod-Ends are badly worn."
"The Steering-Rack has a lot of play in it, both need replacing!"

Prices are as follows;
£115:00 for the Steering-Rack, fitted, :O :O.
£ 50:00 for 2 Track-Rod-Ends, fitted, :O :O :O.
£165:00 for the whole job, fully fitted, :O :O :O :O.
If having both done together I can have 10% off [^] which makes that £148:50 [^] [^] , which is a bit better.

I suppose I should not get too mad as I do over 18,000 miles a year, and my Punto is 10 years old, with 103,000 on the clock. I also get between 40 & 50 MPG every fill [^]!
