Knocking Sound and Steering Wheel Shake!!

HI guys, over the past weeks or so I have noticed a knocking sound when I pull to the right, slightly off centre. When I go past that The knocking stops. I also have a slight shaking on the steering wheel in time with the knocking. Could this be a Wheel Bearing? If it is, what's the worst that could happen if it completely goes? If it's not the Wheel Bearing could you give me an idea of what to look at?

Thanks,
Allen

At the end of the day, it shouldn't be doing it and it needs urgent attention.

As suggested, bottom ball joint, assuming you've checked the wheel bolts.

Cheers

Re: Knocking Sound and Steering Wheel Shake!!

The car should not be driven with wobbling steering. Get the suspension and wheel bearing checked immediately.

As Rally say's check the wheel bolts but TBH they would have probably fallen off by now.

Re: Knocking Sound and Steering Wheel Shake!!

Hey guys, Thanks for the advice! Going to get it up on some ramps over the weekend and have a good look on all four wheels. And get notes down about any work that needs to be done.

Re: Knocking Sound and Steering Wheel Shake!!

Had a problem like this before and it turned out to be bottom ball joint.Left it too late and the ball joint collapsed so better to get it sorted sooner rather than later.

Re: Knocking Sound and Steering Wheel Shake!!

Worn bottom joints are fine when the car is sitting on them, But when the body rolls on hard cornering the pin pops out and....

in my case it was hitting a pothole that f**ked it.With the state of the roads after the big freeze chances of that happening are higher.

Re: Knocking Sound and Steering Wheel Shake!!

my car shakes violently though steering wheel and tends to wonder over the road at high speeds, would these just be the anti-roll bar bushes? - you know, the ones that are easily fixed?

Re: Knocking Sound and Steering Wheel Shake!!

Roll bar joints are unlikely as they dont directly affect the steering. Its far more serious than that.

Dont drive the car until the fault is fixed. Its a nasty accident waiting to happen.

I think its the steering rack, that's what my mechanic said to me.

Re: Knocking Sound and Steering Wheel Shake!!

More likely the track rod ends. No more than #15 each.
There are numerous other pivots and ball joints with any of them about to fall apart.

If its just shaking about it could be a very unbalanced tyre a bulge in the tyre (OMG) along with shot shockers.

Whatever it is the car should be checked on a lift and the fault will be obvious.

Re: Knocking Sound and Steering Wheel Shake!!

i agree - I had a Shake at HighSpeeds - as the tyres were balanced and tracking seemed okay

But not till MOT time - when they said the Track Rod End had gone
replaced it - and Problem sorted

I dowt it'll be Driver Shaft / CV joint, as that'd be noisey all the time, and it'd be only getting worse

I agree - i know times are hard atm ($ wise) But it could save you an accident and an Expensive Insurance Increase next year - get it done and sorted

Re: Knocking Sound and Steering Wheel Shake!!

Sometimes its more expensive to do nothing.

Driving a car with worn steering/suspension/tyres is exactly one of those. Its not if something breaks its when it breaks.

When it does you might get lucky and walk away but the car will be a serious mess. If you get unlucky, it doesnt bear thinking about.

Oh sorry I forgot to mention this too, that's what fixed mine. But what causes the noise mainly was the rack. And the labour for Track Rod End to be replaced cost me around 90 that's without parts(with the parts 155). I had to get it changed or else i failed my MOT... But i see a big improvement in the cars handling and the knocking has gone but i still hear a bit of play but i haven't changed the the steering rack yet. The part is only 35/40 but the labour is around 150. I should be getting it sorted within a few weeks thou.
