Hey everyone i'm new to the forum but a long time visitor. I had this wrote out already but it was way too long so i'm going to start again and shorten it. Basically I have a 1995 Fiat Punto and it hasnt ran in over a year and a half. It's outside a family members house atm and I have a new car. The reason it hasn't ran is because I was collecting someone and turned the battery off and it didnt start after that and I don't remember if the lights came on. I want to get the car fixed up and turn it into a project car but a friends friend had a look at it and said the headgasket was blown and thats why it wouldnt start.. but from what I've read it should still start. Does anyone know what this could be?? Thanks oh and I only got a new starter motor 3 weeks before it happened so its not that :) thanks again

Well you can't tell if the headgasket is blwon without it running so that's sh*t

Could be the wiring to the starter come loose or not getting a good connection. The earth cable or a new battery!

Thanks for the reply thats exactly what I said! I told him the car would still run and he said no. You see this fella is a mechanic so I'd say he said to himself he'll tell me its the headgasket and just throw in a battery he has lying around. I think it is the battery myself so i'm gonna try it in it a.s.a.p and i'll reply back and let you know. Thanks again mate

Many mechanics still to this day hate Fiats/Lancia/Alfa. Back in the 1970's when they rotted like no tomorrow and had highly strung engines they might have been right. But Fiats were the first to sell galvanised bodywork and the engineering is no worse than the other makes and lots better than many. Quite how that brand snobbery has lasted so long is anyone's guess.

As for the cylinder head - it may be blown but how can anyone know if its not running The guy's mechanicking skills seem to have been messed up by his car badge predjudices. Unless of course he has prior knowledge of the car.

Check the heavy cable connections to the starter and the main battery earth lead.
Take out the plugs and squirt some oil down each bore. If it wont turn on the starter push the car in top gear to move the pistons - IGNITION OFF.
Put the battery on a conditioning charger but 10-1 its shot. Try jump leads from a known good battery.
Fuel in the tank will almost certainly have gone off so should be drained. This will give you chance to check out the fuel pump and filter.
With new battery and new fuel its should at least try to start, then you can start worrying about coolant leaks, head gaskets, etc.
Once its going and the HG is known to be OK change the oil and filter. Also flush the cooling system and fit new coolant**. Not much pont before that as coolant will contaminate the oil.

** READ THE COOLNAT BLEEDING GUIDE or you will soon be needing an new HG regardless of its current state.

It was his first time seeing the car so he has no knowledge of the car previously. I was gonna ask about draining the fuel but noticed you said it. How much fuel would I have to put into the tank to get it started again? BTW I can actually here the starting motor try to kick in so does that mean the starter is ok?? Thanks
