hello,

problem 1.
i have a 1994 M reg punto 55s
the ECU light was showing intermittently (usually whilst idling at traffic lights and coming right off the accellerator pedal) tried the ecu reset, which hasnt worked, light still comes on, when the light does come on the engine sounds different, and iff at speed with little or no gas, its almost as if ive tapped the brake pedal, question 1 is...whats causing it?
The air filter box clip is broken....it tightens but i would imagine the seal is not air tight, could this be causing it?

problem 2.
the mpg seems really bad, there was just under half a tank yesterday(around 13/32nd of a tank, and after about 7-8 miles im on a quarter. what could cause this? and could the two problems be related

any help greatly appreciated
a hunch of mine is the spark plug gap?

im gonna try a "temporary fix" on the air filter (old work belt) in the air filter until i can fine one in a scrappys(none today when i went, only 3 puntos in total) and see if that cure any one of the two problems

doubtfull on the airbox. infact no chance.

sensors around the injector unit, temp sensor or coils id say! perhaps lambada sensor?

id suggest a diagnostic but most monkeys dont understand the codes properly on a diag.

A code is intended as a guide to diagnostic fault finding only,it is up the the 'monkey' to decipher & use his knowledge/training as to how to act on this code.I agree take it for a diagnostic check but do so at a good dealer, ask questions & speak to the 'monkey' afterwards to gain a understanding of work done not to the reception desk who are doing a different job & didn't work on your car!
Ask for no more than one hour to be spent on the car this is plenty of time for a detailed diagnostic.

Any other options....would rather try the free stuff before going to a fiat dealer.....in fact i think id rather cut my left arm off

LOL, ;)

Well you could look at it this way,£40-45 for diagnostic (then get any bits from ebay or scrappy & doing it yourself) or waste a few weeks trying this & that in the hope it fixes your problem plus wasting money going to halfords buying bits/injector cleaner etc....or you could learn to become ambidextrous ;)

Gotta start at the basics,as you say are your plugs (& HT leads) ok?

i knew i forgot somthing today...set of feelerguages (first car...new to it all)

on another note iv seem to have oil around the block...below the head only.....is this a suspect head gasket? how much? and are there any other tel tale signs?

rocker gasket.

1.70 from engine component places, 4 bolts to change!!

could that be causing the fuel economy problem and/or ECU light

cant find rocker gasket in haynes.....is it called camshaft cover gasket in there.....(thats about where the leak looks to be coming from.....ill post some pics soon

I think i got it...not too bothered as its being sold soon....the ait inlet pipe from the filter box to the head was loose.....and the valve type thing in the airbox was stiff....while i was poking around in there i found some oil in the filterbox....is that normal???....oh and i put some oil in..... so one of the above bodgits seem to have worked (now time to put another £20 in the tank ......third in 3 weeks)

I worked it out...i was getting roughly 23 mpg...driving like an old man

oh and i havnt seen the light since i did it (saturday)

well, finally got it, (fingers crossed) one of the air hoses had developed a hole (near the throttle body i think), cut the hose before the hole, reattached, difference was instant, idling is now a healthy petrol engine sound, rather than the previous diesel type sound it gave out,

just thought id post up as it may help somone else

yes, but i dont usually drive with my head in the bonnet :p
i thought i head some air rushing but i couldnt find it at first, an the hole wasnt small......is was more or less an inch tear on the underside (so i couldnt see it)

yup........still a quarter of a tank of petrol after a week when i put half a tank in.....but sold now, sister in law bought it

can you operate the accelerator from the engine bay??

Clean new (rubber) gasket and both mounting surfaces with carb cleaner. A thin but adequate bead of oil-resistant silicone sealant on both sides of the gasket, with special attention to the corners and any contoured bits, then let it 'cure' or 'go off' for an hour or so. Only FINGER-TIGHTEN the cover mounting bolts evenly, then add another 1/8th turn or so. Be careful; over-tightening will screw-up the whole job and you'll need to start all over again. Good luck...
