Hey guys, huge, huge, huge problem..

Some of you might know about the rattling sound from the front drivers side wheel I posted last week. Well today it got worse, I was driving along a carriageway stopped at some lights and when I went to move again I did so, but only barely so as I was accelerating I changed gears. Doing so it sounded like the car was continuing to accelerate and was over revving and the gears wouldn't change, not sure how this happened but then it pulled me over front the right hand lane in to the left hand lane. I instantly put foot on the brake and pulled handbrake up and took keys out of ignition before I mounted the kerb.

I have no idea what caused this but the car was fine again to drive after a few minutes? I don't think it is safe to drive at the moment so got a spare car for now until I can get this problem checked over.

Anyone heard or experienced anything like this before?

Also forgot to mention, when going over bumps there seems to be like metal making contact with something from the front drivers wheel?

Hi. Handbrake on, run engine and put it in 1st gear and try and pull away.Should stall. Indication that clutch is operating.
Jack car up and take front wheels off . Rock the running gear and suspension by hand . If something is wrong or loose you should see. Get someone to sit in the car and rotate the steering lock to lock too.
Let me know if you find anything wrong
Regards Andy

Hey Andy, thanks for your reply I will try this tomorrow. Can the wheel test be done without the wheel being taken off? The MOT Centre has still got my wheel locking nut and they are closed over the weekend so I will need to wait until they are open for business on Monday

Thanks

OK! Just jacked the car up checked behind the wheel, looked fine. So I tried the gear test and guess what, it didn't move a bit. Took handbrake down, tried moving in 1st really high revs, i mean really high and it moves slightly.

And in 1st gear the car rolls backwards and when put in reverse it rolls forward (odd i know)

Can anyone help? My father thinks its the clutch? But he only replaced it a few months ago

Cheers

Clutch cant make the car pull to one side as you described, and if a new clutch has recently been fitted I'd put my money on a differential problem of some sort, the diff is there to do precisely what it did but not in the way you experienced. It allows each wheel to rotate at the same speed in a straight line but allows the outer wheel in a corner to rotate faster then the inner wheel. Sounds like something has gone wrong in there to me.

If it drives it cant possibly be the clutch and the gear failing to select properly also cant be the clutch. It sounds like the gear change mechanism is faulty either gearbox or under the gear lever.

Differential could cause it to run straight on a bend but unlikely to make it dance from lane to lane.

Just gave the car a rock forward and rock backwards to see if 1st gear and reverse gear works. They do but the clutch feels really heavy/stiff when I am trying to get my bite.

I know this sounds like a real crap answer but is the gear knob on back to front?
You know 1st/rev... rev/1st. wont acc for everything but ?

Well I hope not had the car for over a year and half now :slayer:

But the 1st rolls back thing fixed itself for now its just the heavy clutch and high revs which got me concerned right now. Might take her for a test run tomorrow night around the corner
