Hey i was hoping someone here could spread some light on this issue for me please

I have a Fiat Punto 1995 1.2

It keeps overheating and you can hear the water bubbling over in the radiator,

I replaced the thermostat i think it was? replaced that last night, basically the switch that screws into the radiator next to the fan, has 2 wires go to it, like a heat sender maybe? i also drained the system, Filled it back up. so there was no air in the system , just water.

Anyway i replaced that , left the car on tickover and wholla fan kicked in, hey presto i drive to work with no problems and i drive back home no problems, This morning i go to work no problems, until i get onto the work carpark and i hear it again, Look under the car and water everywhere, I lift the bonnet and its blowing past the Rad filler cap. So i think to myself damn i obviously put too much water in, i carry on at work, let the engien cool down, fill it back up again 5 hours later, drive home same problem happens, only this time its not blowing past the cap, u can just hear the water, It makesa noise like someone kicking a wall repeatedly. The fan didnt kick in at all and when i undid the screw on the bleed pipe at the back of the engine i got lots of air out.

I have done thsi method many times over the past few months, and i always get air out the system when there was none in. Its leaking in somewhere maybe?

Blown head?
Cracked block?

any help will be much appreciated :)

ok first thing always put anti freeze in the engine stops corrosion in the engine, rads and pipes
2nd there is a bleed screw on the radiator have you let the air out of there its top left of the rad under the light and its usually white that could be a problem and as for air always coming in check all pipes once you put water in and see if there is any leaks so you know air is getting in or not
hope this helps

tried that mate when i fill up the radiator i always unscre that, fill till water comes out there, and then unscrew the one at the back, till water comes out there, still no good

Hi there, this is only a suggestion in relation to your problem. I previously owned a mk2 ELX 16v punto and at one point did encounter overheating problems. I presumed it was all down to the radiator and the level of water but it was not at all. Due to cheap and thin engine oil which I purchased from halfords, it burns quick and does not last long at all. I found out that i had no oil in my sump and engine and had been running the car like that for a few days. I was very lucky to not have blown the engine :), my only other suggestion is to check what coolant your using, you cant mix blue with red for instance and if you have mix them then you will need to drain the radiator and fill it with part water and ONLY one part red OR blue coolant.

Hope this helps.

Radiator leaks drop the level (obviously) but if its blowing over to the coolant tank, almost certainly the head gasket has blown. They dont go gently on Fiats. If you want confirmation get the garage to do a gas test on the coolant - any exhaust gas in coolant = blown head gasket.

When its done make sure you check the coolant level EVERY week and NEVER use plain water. In hard water areas use premixed coolant or distilled water and antifreeze.

As mentioned you MUST use 50% coolant and not just water! Water just doesn't have the right cooling capacities? How far is it you are driving to work for this to happen?

Take the rad cap off and run the engine, get someone to rev it a bit and see if any bubbles come up, or if it gets worse the more you rev it. If so it's a blown head gasket
