Hi Everybody, can you help me. i had my car serviced and when i drove it home the revs suddenly shot up to about 5000-6000 revs and then slowly died down and floated around the 1000 mark. this happened everytime i touched the accelerator. i had to be towed home. when you start the car it runs perfectly until the engine temp is upto normal running, you only get the problem then. the garage wont help saying its not there fault. its a non fiat garage(im so stupid) the rac man thinks its something to do with lack of air, because it idles perfectly without the air filter box on, rev as much as you like and no over revving. i need to take it to a fiat garage but could you help me first, i would br very grateful..
Also should there be a spring loaded flap or valve in the air filter box to help manage the air flow?????

Think theres quite a few posting on this topic if you search throughout the forums.I'd start but making sure throttle cable isn't sticking, reset the ECU & if all else fails look at changing the throttle potentiometer.Normally though they do this at any time not just when its hot,i'd go for the ECU reset first ;)

Thankyou for your quick reply, the RAC guy reset the ecu and checked and lubbed the throttle cable. but i will ask the garage to check the potenometer, also do you know if the air filter box should have a flap or valve in it???????????? yours neil

What year of punto is it?
Cant see any type of flap on airbox,can look for yourself here;

If its newer type punto & it is the throttle potentiometer at fault then this can be renewed seperately not as a whole throttle body which is bit expensive.Have a quick look through previous postings before you do anything else as there are lots of similar idle problems there.

Thankyou i will have a look, its so bloody frustrating everything is fine until you touch the accelerator pedal, then it just revs to about 5000, it will just idle normally uptil then... year is nov 2000 X REG

Garage just told me the diagnostic computer has said the pressure sensor has completely failed and the steper motor is faulty, they are going to charge me 172.00 pound for pressure sensor and 460.00 pound for steper motor including fitting etc. a grand total of 630.00 pounds... iam totally gutted, thankyou to everyone who helped me, much appreciated..

thanks dave i will give them a call, sometimes i get a sort of tinny rattling noise from near the water pump/alternater, do you think it could be cam belt tensioner or something. it only happens when engine warm and i hace pulled up and parked or occasionally at traffic..... it hasnt happened when engine is cold... its only happened 3 times, but sounds horribe all the same...

tiny screeching, noise goes when you move forward or when fan cuts in and the noise lessons slightly if you take the water filler screw top off. but it doesnt do it very often....ps do you know what the pressure sensor does, has it something to do with accelerator pressure???????

Neild I get the feeling your getting ripped off!!!
Like Dave has said go elsewhere! I find it hard to believe the pressure sensor & stepper motor have gone faulty at the same time, sounds like the garage is covering all angles at your expense.
Another thing is what 'stepper motor'? and £460? I assume your Punto is the new shape (188) model & idle problems are 'normally' due to throttle body or more precise the potentiometer which as stated you can now get seperate. The pressure sensor measures absolute air pressure which I honestly doubt is your problem (revving at 5000 rpm!) please take it elsewhere first its worth £40 for hours diagnostic if its going to save you hundreds. Also ask for printout of diagnostic fault codes & the conditions (air/water/idle speed etc) & post it up on the forum so everyone can can have a look.
Can you remove the airfilter box & observe the throttle (butterfly) valve & see whats happening to it when you 'blip' the throttle, does it return to closed posistion?

Well i decided to have the work done to stop over revving. they fitted a new throttle body and pressure sensor as well as checked fuel injection system etc etc. iam happy to report it runs like a dream(for how long, dont know). i drove to sheffield and back to test it and it runs better than when i bought it new??????. the clutch has also stopped juddering as well, dont understand that one. got to take it back after 500 miles for a free recheck of the system.
for the first 150 miles the accelleration was crap, but it got better and better. the engine has quieted down, i can hardly hear the engine running and it idles perfectly, unlike when i bought it. how much do fiat check their new cars????? before you buy them. i would like to thank all those who helped me, A BIG THANKYOU....

Neil

If your vehicle run like crap then, ecu on the vehicle would have faulted the pressure sensor anyway, but it probably didn't need it. The fault would have been the stepper motor distorting when getting hot making it stick. Replaced Loads of these. Sorry

Hahahaha not well enough mate, things we find at PDI stage gives us a laugh, cooling fan not plugged in/seat belts missing/air filters missing even had a f****d ECU.Still thats what PDI's are for ;)
Glad you got your car running well, good luck (y)
