Hi there i have just purchased an R reg fiat punto elx, lovely car, plenty of power,, now i have 1 or 2 problems with it if anyone can help..

1. The passenger door motor doesnt open with the rest of the central locking ?
2. The fuel gauge seems to be skipping from full to empty all the time
3. i have a small leak in the windscreen washer fluid tank, any ideas on how to fix this?

thanks in advance

Dave

You will need the locking unit solenoid if it is knackered, if you have a multimeter you can test the motor see if it works, sometimes WD40 frees it up.

Does the fuel gauge do this when you corner?

For the washer tank, replacement is cheap enough from scrappy around a fiver. Replace that, nothing really to seal it.

Try 01206 735040, Fiat Spares in Colchester.

Hey there, yeah it seems to shoot up and down when i corner, drive on a normal straight road and go over bumps? is this normal.. and thanks for the rest of the advice :).. do you think the door solanoid is easy enough to repair myself :)

This happens is most puntos because the fuel is measured on one side of the tank by a float and as the fuel moves around it goes up and down a lot!

I'd go to a scrappy for this part too ;)

You make a good point, it shouldn't happen on a normal straight road. The fuel level sender is attached to the fuel pump, so you might need to take it apart and have a look. It's under the rear seats and isn't too much hassle to see ;)

In my car the needle can go from 3/4 of a tank to 1/4 of a tank when going round bends when there's actually 1/2 a tank of petrol!

cheers for all the advice guys, i will have a look and see what i can do :D.. will keep you posted !

ok, so iv managed to fix the water leak by replacing the valve in which the 2 pipes connect up to which is good, iv now also found an oil drip, nothing major but wondering what it is, it is underneath the car to the drivers side nearish the front, an oil pan or something?... now i have another problem, my passenger door window which is electric, works fine on passenger side but the drivers side used to be able to control it, now it can only make it go down?

HELP!!

That is common, mine does it if a corner on back roads fast, even my mates ELX Cabrio does it. It's the floater in the tank.

Door is easy enough to repair yourself, get the part from the scrappy, way cheaper than Fiat.

cheers :D. but i have tried taking the door card off and i cant seem to do it!!, i have taken off all the screws and everything else and try lifting it and it wont budge :p?? i have fixed the electric window fault now which required a replacement window control free of charge from my local scrappy, :p.. i have done so many repairs for free :D

keep helping :D

It's more commonly referred to at the 'sump', but it doesn't look like a typical leak (car bottoming out on the suspension and getting a hole punctured in it.)

This could be a few things, you should try and find the highest point that has oil on it in the engine. This can be a bit tricky and you'll need a torch, but try to work your way down, rather than up!

If it's no higher than the sump (or pan ;) ) then it's probably the gasket on the sump. These are relatively cheap (~£15 from fiat) and just require you draining the oil and replacing it (you can add a bit of silicone sealant (if it isn't already required) for extra piece of mind.

If it is any higher up, try to picture it and more advice will follow :)

Hiya just found the same problem with my punto just taken the exact picture an location did you get round to finding out what the oil leak was from?

That looks like the Crankshaft Seal has gone but it could also be the Cam-Shaft Seal, the Rocker Cover Gasket or oil leaking from the Sump.

See where its coming from and then eliminate them one by one.
