The temp gauge My Punto 55SX (1995) refuses to work. If I earth the spade connector on the engine block the needle leaps up to the max.(So theres no problem at the gauge end or connection)

Replacing the sensor in the engine block has not cured it either.

Does the connection loop through something else before it gets to the dash ??

Please put me out my misery.

Sorry about that, He emailed me so ui replied. What i said,Is that if it is bridged out and the guage goes to max then you can rule out a wiring fault. Also its not related to anything else. Their is a seperate blue temp sensor in the manifold for fuel injection. Anyway i also said that make sure its a genuine one that is fitted and for a 1.1spi or 1.2spi the sensor on the block near timing cover should be a red/orange colour. tHIS SHOULD SOLVE PROBLEM... :p

ive had exactly the same problem with my temp gauge, got a new sender unit with a red top off fiat.. same problem...

replaced the gauge.. same problem.. replaced the back of the dash that holds the dials etc.. same problem.. replaced the wire that runs from the gauge to the sender unit.. same problem

any ideas?

If you bridged it out on the cyl head and the gauge went to max the only thing that will stop it from working is the temp sendor. Unless you had no water in coolant system, But then it would still work through heat transfer of the head, but it would be a lot slower.

i bridged it to the head and it shot up, thats why i bought a new temp sender - and like i said - it does the same thing.

theres def water in there, i can change a headgasket but cant make the temp gauge work lol

could it be a dodgy dash earth?

STILL DOESN'T WORK!!!

My car is a 1.2 Petrol and I have tried 3 senders now - two from a scrappy and 1 new from Partco and neither of them have made a difference (other than to my wallet!)

so

this is how I understand it

a)The sender is screwed into the crankcase near the oil dipstick (should there be a washer or something between the case and the sender or does it not matter? My mate said his fuel gauge in his Beetle didn't work 'cause when he fitted a new sender unit in he forgot to put in the brass washer - so does this work of the same principle??)

b)The wire then goes direct to the back of the dash where it's part of that unit with about 7 wires that plugs into the back just behind the fuel and temp gauges)

c)which connects straight to the gauge itself

Is that right?
This is doing my head in big style so pleeeeeeeeease someone help me before I call the Samaritans

Kind regards

Gino

exactly the same problem.

i dont think it needs a washer or anything, ive checked and the sender unit is grounding fine - checked with a multimeter. and the innner connection on the sender shows resistance between it and ground, so that works.

when i touch the cable on the block, the gauge shoots up to max, so that works too..

Gino, you're correct about the ways its wired -from what i can tell anyway, and ive replaced EVERYTHING that you've mentioned

any ideas people?

Hi gino,
1998 1.7 td60
I fixed my problem, my post (temp gauge problem (new cluster fitted))
I know my problem is slightly different to yours. I got a sensor unit for an SXtd that has a temp gauge as standard, from my local part co. at £7.99.
The sensor unit gives a variable signal dependent on temperature unlike cars with simple warning light that uses a sensor switch, ON/Off at a given temperature so all I can think your problem may be is the wrong type of sender/sensor.
Is the temp gauge in your car original to the car or has a gauge been fitted?
The only physical difference I could see between the two types of sensor is that the variable type has a protruding bit at the water end of it and the switch type has just a flat end.
Hope this helps
Mick

I am having exactly the same issue .... swapped clocks from an SX into my 55S. Rev counter works fine after fitting the signal wire to ECU loom, but I have run out of ideas for getting the temperature gauge to work .... tried 2 different brand new senders that should be correct part and nada.

Flisko suggested going to a scrapyard and pulling a sender from an SX/Sporting which sounds a good plan.

Otherwise I am going to fit an after market gauge to a sender in radiator hose and bypass the weird Fiat electrics completely.
