mk1 punto or indeed any fiat code one system
i was not to impressed with the hear there and everywhere information about the code system on mk1 punto's and people despite the stiky are still asking questions so i decided to right this

to understand what all the keys do you need to understand what happened when these cars were first prodused

all the parts engine ecu code box and keys are fitted to the car

the first time the car is turned on it is done with the red key the code box reads the code from the red key and makes this the master code and regards the red key as it's master or programming key

it then sends this code down the serial line to the virgin engine ecu which then regards this code as master also

the code box and engine ecu once they receive this code both permanently memorise it it cannot be altered unless you have specialist equipment

(there are some out there who can return these things to virgin state or un coded state or extract the master code from them for you)

once this is done the red key is the only key that will start the car

the red key as it is master will then open the code box memory using the programming procedure to program blue keys any amount from 2 to 8 can be used

when other programed keys are used in the ignition after being programed the code box excepts them and sends the red key master code stored in itself down to the ecu and allows the car to start as if the red key was used

fiat cars were sold with a code card showing the red keys code (the override master code) these cards were removed on British sold fiats at bristal docks due to insurance worries in this country stupid really

these cards could be used to input the code into the engine ecu with the use of the throttle pedal in the event of a key or code box problem they also have the mechanical cut of the keys to allow for the ordering of new keys after total loss these cards can be ordered from fiat to chassis number or about 10 quid or they use to be anyway i think your dealer now needs to open a case with fiat to acquire your code due to the age of the vehicles

so the red key is vital for programming new blue keys to your car

if you don't have it and you lose any of your keys you will need to purchase the hole system from fiat meaning a hefty prise somewhere near 800quid fitted

it is much cheaper to remove all the relevant parts from another car that has been scrapped they also turn up on ebay from time to time

to program new keys to the car this is the procedure

1. turn red key in ignition to mar wait for code light to go out
2. turn first blue key in ignition to mar and wait for code light to go out
3. turn second blue key in ignition to mar and wait for code light to go out
4. turn red key in ignition to mar and wait for code light to go out
5. wait between 4 and 9 seconds
6. turn red key again to mar

the code light should now stay on meaning all keys are programed

you can add up to 8 keys to that sequence

if the code light does not stay on you need to keep turning the red key on and off until it does

if it still does not stay on start again

if it works wait a minute and test all the blue keys

if you have a red key for your car you should not use it to run the car on a daily basis it will eventually damage the code box doing so as every time you use it it opens the programming memory

the code for the red key can be extracted from the engine ecu or code box buy specialists and input into another red key cost about 100quid i think

blue keys can be bout from places other than fiat but they don't look half as good as fiat ones no logo and such but they are cheaper but have been known to stop working from time to time

they can be bought ready to program to the car or they can be a clone of a key you have for the car

if you ever have a problem with the code system on your car the best thing to do is post on FIAT FORUM first as there are plenty of options you can chose from depending what's wrong and what you have or don't have

now you all know how to program them no need to pay a dealer to do it

the blue keys from a dealer cost about 50 quid

a virgin code box can be bought quite cheap if that has failed assuming you have your red key if not a blank one will be needed

if the engine ecu is broke you can get a virgin one and you do not require the red key to fit one of these as the code box stores the master code from it

the red keys can be opened to swap the chip from one to another meaning you can sometimes avoid changing all your locks if you purchase second hand ecus and keys from another car but you will need a blank if you again don't have your own red one and have it cut to your locks these are very cheap blank chipless keys

if you have all virgin ecus on the car and you use a blue key that will be come the master even thou it's blue this just shows you that all the keys are the same apart from colour and shape but i wouldn't recommend making a blue key the master try and make an effort to use a red key or things will get very confusing

the possibilities are seemingly endless but now hopefully with a little understanding of the system and how everything is linked everyone can all understand the easiest and cheapest way to fix there cars and the parts they will need be it new from fiat second hand or a mix of the two
