Hi all...

I've just got my forst punto.
Really nice car :)

But I allready have some problems.

1) When I drive for 5 min. a burn smell starts to appear.
Its not very "hard" you can barely smell it. Smells kinda like burned plastic.

2) There is a cylinder in the motor, which is broken. I've attached a photo of it.
What does this part do, and what is it called (need a new one :)

Does the two have anything to do with each other.

And there maybe is a problem with the ABS brakes.
I cant seem to get them to activate.

Hope you guys can help me, and please excuse my bad grammer.
I'm from Europe

Forgot the images I think...

directs hot air from manifold to intake to warm up car faster(operating temperature)

you dont say what car/engine/model you have;)

mk1 punto...this wouldnt be causing the burning smell

Are you sure you have abs? its not the type of thing you "see/feel working", unless you need it. . . that ofcourse if you have got it in the first place.

do you have new tires? That could be the reason for ABS not to kick in. Press the pedal to the metal real hard...it should make rrrrrrrrr noise. (y)

Thank you for the answers.

I believe that the burning smell comes from the brakes. Later today I will take it for a spin and try to see if I can find out where the smell is coming from.

The ABS brakes light does torn on and then off when I start the motor.
It is not on when I'm driving.

There are not new tires on it.

My punto is from 1997, 1.2 MK1.

So. I took it for a spin.
I could not locate the smell, but it is not a burned smell, more like exhaust smell.

I also find out that the smell only come when the air blow is set to warm air. Not when blowing cold.

Any idea?

I am not an car expert (yet :) ) so can you please clarify something for me.

Does the manifold you are refering to, have anything to do with the exhoust?
Where does the warm air come from?

And what is the intake? Is it the air intake?

Thank you so far...

warm air comes from around the engine (heated by the engine). The intake is the casting beneath it and at the end of the pipe on the airbox (goes to the drivers side on a UK car).

This air comes out of the exhaust after it has been combusted with the fuel in the engine but will not cause a burning smell!

Okay. So what that broken cylinder does, is only to "guide" the hot air to the air intake. Is that correct?

And the air we are talking about isn't polluted yet. Right?

The smell is not burning really. It is more like the smell of air coming out of the exhaust. At least I think so. Its kinda difficult to determine.

At first I thought it smelled like burning plastic, but today I was taking a drive and turned the heaters on, and the smell was really strong.
Like an exhaust or maybe a hot motor.

I cant see exhaust coming out anywhere in the motor, but it seems like the smell is strongest when I use a lot of gas.

Hi mate,

The broken cylinder in your photo is sitting on top of the exhaust manifold. As T says, the exhaust manifold heats up quickly when the engine is started, and the broken cylinder sucks some of the warmth from around the manifold into the engine air intake. This air does not go anywhere near the inside of the car, but goes into the engine and eventually out of the exhaust. So i would ignore it all together.

I would check the exhaust manifold itself for leaks/holes. You may get a leak where the exhaust manifold meets the cylinder head, or if the manifold has rusted through in any place. This would cause exhaust gasses to escape into the engine bay instead of out of the exhaust at the rear. In turn, these exhaust gasses can then make their way out of the rear of the bonnet as you are going along, and into the cold air intake for the inside of the car. This is DANGEROUSE! as it will contain carbon dioxide which can cause you to pass out and lead to brain damage etc. Also check the downpipe from the manifold. There should be very little exhust fume smell in the engine bay when the engine is running.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Okay
I think I undertsand now. It is not the exhaust air that comes out. But only heated air?

What cylinder head are you talking about now?

It did help a lot. Thanks.

If I drive with the fans all turned off (for now, until I have have figured this out) it shouldn't be dangerus right?

Arite min, yes it is the exhaust air that is coming out that is heated but its going straight back into the engine so lets not worry about that, right in that picture you posted up the hot air feed going to your filter box is coming from your exhaust manifold that is bolted onto the clyinder head, check your manifold for holes/cracks that could be letting the exhaust gases into your car as your driving along, as for the dangers imposed i wouldnt like to pass comment saying that turning the heaters off would remove any dangers as i cant be sure, best thing to do it to identify and correct the problem quickly! after all if the car has a strong smell of exhaust gases inside perhaps it isnt a good idea to drive it!
