Take the battery out again.
Do it as posted.
Charge the battery for say 4hr
Put it in again as posted.

Re: Taking the battery out of my MK1

Try it with a new/fresh battery or if you can try to jump start it - by the sounds of it the battery sounds like it's dead if it can't hold a charge.

Re: Taking the battery out of my MK1

Yes, the purpose of the alternator is to supply enough electricity for the engine to work and to charge the battery. It should be enough to get to the battery shop or garage.

Yep I'd say it's the battery - try another in it before you take it to a garage. Lights dimming certainly sounds like it hasn't enough charge to turn itself over.

I have just bought a battery booster, will this start the car if the problem is the alternator or the battery ??

Re: Taking the battery out of my MK1

Try starting with jump leads, connect leads in correct order etc.

If car does start.........get a new battery or have the battery tested.

New battery should be about £35ish

Re: Taking the battery out of my MK1

right, i think that it is not the battery now, because both the booster and jump starting the car won't work so i am starting to think it is the alternator. How much am i looking at to get a new one and to fit it ???
