No spark - punto gt

Hello

I have a problem with my Punto GT 95 mod (133 HP). I have no ignition, it just "died" when I drove it, silently with no noises or anything.
I've done a check however. All fuses are fine, found one cluster in the engine room, one in the coupe at the passenger side and one at the driver side. I measured zero voltage from the wire leading to the distributor, but I didn't find the coil leading to the distributor, it's hard for me when I lack the instruction manual(imported car). Does anyone know if I can download it somewhere?
Has anyone encountered this problem before? Are there hidden fuses for the ignition? Is the brain located in the coupe with a device to convert the voltage to high voltage for the spark plugs?
The car is very rare here in Norway, maybe 4 or 5 maks, so it's hard when nobody actually has a clue

Re: No spark - punto gt

If you've lost all power from the battery (i.e. lights don't work, indicators etc) then I doubt it will be a fuse (unless you've been unlucky and blown a load at once)

Could be one of the earthing straps that have come loose/gone rusty. If I remember correctly the main one on the GT is beneath the battery tray so you'll have to remove that to check.

It could of course be a simple as a flat battery - sorry to ask but have you checked this?

Hope this helps.

Re: No spark - punto gt

The thing is, I can turn the key and chin (not sure of the word in english) the engine. As I turn the key the starter engine turns the eninge but I have no spark, so the battery must be ok. Maybe it's an Idea to check this earthing strip anyway?

If the engine turns over (i think that's what you mean by "chin" ) then it won't be the battery or the earthing strap.

Take a spark plug out, connect the plug lead back up and get someone to turn the engine over to see if you do actually get a spark. If not, then try changing the ignition leads (you can buy off ebay) or coil (again you can get on ebay but more expensive). It is located at the front of the engine near the oil level dipstick.

If you are getting a spark then could be a fuel problem - but try the plugs first.

Hope this helps.

Re: No spark - punto gt

I appreciate your answer warwick. I've allready checked the plugs, that's how I concluded there is no spark I just too be fix my moped you see
So the coil is located near the oil dipstick in the front huh. Can you tell me if the brain is in the coupe-passenger side-behind the cd-player?

Re: No spark - punto gt

No problem.

By "brain" I presume you mean ECU (electronic control unit)? If so, it is located under the grille where the front windscreen wipers are - you have to take the wipers off to get to it.

Cheers.

Re: No spark - punto gt

ok well first check that the code light and injection light are doing what they normally do on the dash as you turn on the ignition

code light small yellow key should go out after 0.7 of a second
engine warning light red injector shape should go out after a few seconds

if this is so then the ecus are working

after this you need to check the live feed to the coil with a test meter prope the pins on the plug to the ignition coil till you find a live 12v

to find the coil flow the king lead centre lead from the distributor

if there is a live then there is no spark simply because the ecu is not triggering the coil or there is a fault with the wire from coil to ecu for the earth

it's most likely that the crank sensor on the engine has failed so the ecu cannot determine when to spark

these will cost you about 30 uk pounds and fitting is easy one 10mm bolt normally

i'm not to sure were they are on the GT model but they are located close up to a ring of some sort with lots of lumps and gaps on and then one longer lump in one place normally at the cam belt (or front) end of the engine

Re: No spark - punto gt

Funny you should mention that littlepip17, I've had the red injection light since I bought it. A friend of mine with experience said the light could come and go, so I waited it out. What does it mean exactly?
We measured the resistance in the crank sensor wire to be 840 Ohms, but we didn't have any literature on it.
Thanks both...

It means a fault has been registered and stored with the ECU. The fault could relate to any of the sensors.

On the GT the light will not go out until a few seconds after the car has been started - but it should go out. It does come and go intermittently as the ECU registers a fault and then clears the problem itself. Fiat dealer told me the diagnostic system on early GT's is too sensitive - why the reason the light comes and goes.

Hope you sort it.

Re: No spark - punto gt

Allright! Now we're getting somewhere So it could actually be the crank sensor then. It could be the origin of the light and wil ultimately resolve in no spark. I believe that is a decent theory

Re: No spark - punto gt

erm without having a look 840 ohms could well be quite correct

but crank sensors don't always fail electronically the magnets in them can become weak after a wile also

other things that can go wrong on early bosh injected turbos are the amp pack for the coil that controls it on the wing i believe or iner wing not sure

but i would say fr now as you light is on you best get it read buy a fiat dealer that should certainly guide you closer to the fault no point spending money on parts you don't need

also if someone tells you to keep driving with the light on please stop taking there advice on anything straight away if it was my car i would want to know why it's on straight away
