Hi, I have a bit strange problem with my Punto 55S, 1994 (150.000 km).
I had a first breakdown - engine just turned off. I tried to start it again (battery was fine) but it seemed like the engine is getting no fuel or sparks are not fireing. Few hours later, when I tried to start the engine again (no repair was done), it started just fine, like no problem was ever there.
The second breakdown - the same simptoms as the first - engine just turned off. After tolling my car to the nearest garage, the mechanics said that this is because my old (60.000 km) cambelt was misfitted and he changed it together with the tensioner. Now the engine works fine.
I can agree with the second repair, but I cannot be sure that something is not wrong with the ECU or injection (refering to my first breakdown, when car fixed itself :).

Has anyone had similar problems or has a good advice for me?

Thanks in advance.

if it happens again the two components worth looking at are the main injection system relay and the rpm sensor, intermitent failers in one of these components could cause the simptoms you described.

Thanks kebab!

My Punto does not have an RPM meter, so this is probably related to injection system. Is main injection system relay part of the ECU, or it can be changed/fixed separately?
Would it be worth going into Fiat Service now (while engine is working) to have it checked (e.g. from the ECU memory) or do I have to wait until my car breaks down again?

Thanks in advance.

you do have an rpm sensor, its by the bottom pully.
the relay is bolted too the bulkhead in the engine bay, its located in the middle under a black plastic cover i think.
i think its more likly the rpm sensor if i were you i would just change it, there not even that expensive.
