Technical Oil Leak (Rocker gasket or head gasket???)

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but an oil leak often occurs at the 'O' ring seal behind the coil mounting bracket. This can be wrongly diagnosed as a valve cover gasket leak.

yes this is common but it leaves oil on the thermostat and on the little ledge of the head below not round the front like that

if there are no cracks then it may be head gasket as the oil riser is in the middle at the front there and could well get blown to were it is i have seen it once here before with similar effects from a head gasket

that price you got is good just make sure there skimming it

it would be a good move in your situation as we all know what there like if not looked after for head gaskets so piece of mind anyway

getting the headgasket replaced is hardly a good move if its the head thats cracked is it.......

find out what it is before you give any garage the go ahead on any work.

good point

erm just remembered my battles with oil leaks and i remember i had to clean the engine numerous times afters before it stayed dry and free from oil i assume it was because oil was still down the bottom of the block and was getting blown up as i drove it so maybe best thing to do is just keep cleaning and see if it stops if not at least it will be clean enough to try see were it's coming from

yeh it is the head gasket, my friuend who works for nissan said it was a few months back but I didnt believe him, then I put it into a garage and paid em 30 bloody quid to find out wht it is and they reported back head gasket and wanted 450 for it, told em to shove it, took it to another garage and they sed yeah it is ya head gasket so dats 3 people sayin in, and if they wana fo it for 282 then i'll have to go with that

thanks for all your advice people, ill post back on this thread and let u kno bout life after the works been done(y)

Make sure they change your water pump and timing belt tensioner while its all off.

Do you know why hg has gone, no sense in getting it fixed if your engine is still overheating.

Make sure your stat is working ok and your rad is clear(y)

I got mine done for £315 with new valve stem seals thrown in.

Had to replace the rad and stat myself to solve the overheating issues.

valve stem seals come with the head gasket kit it's just no one ever bothers to replace them they never give trouble on fire engines anyway

also it's not overheating it's an oil leak he's trying to fix

Yep, your rocker gasket has gone.

Very simple fix, costs about £3 to get a replacement and you can fit it in under 5 minutes.

My gasket had gone hard from old age, and someone previous to me had topped it up with too much engine oil which blew the weak part of the seal out just by the distributor.

Fun times :) hahaha

-Sorry I don't know much about cars.....
But could do with a bit of help.

I have spent hours reading up on this, but unfortunately haven't found any pictures anywhere on the net where someone explains (with an arrow ideally) where the Head Gasket and the Rocker Gasket is on a Fiat Punto mk1 engine.

I have read it being explained in words, but still don't get it.

Anybody ??

Post 18 - green arrows = Rocker Cover Gasket
HG = Under the Exhaust Manicat - There will be a "line" where the Cylinder Head meets the Cyclinder Block

Its not easy to see, esp with road grime all over it

Head gasket replacement is not a job for a noob mechanic. I'm not trying to be offensive its just too much to get wrong.

Also you need to be sure it is the head gasket leaking before hitting the tool box. The oily area in the pix is above the exhaust manifold so its above the head gasket joint.

There is absolutely no point in changing the head gasket gasket. Also:

  • The rocker cover joint will leak if it is pulled down too tight
  • The rocker cover joint will leak if the rocker cover is warped.
  • The rocker cover joint will leak if you dont use a new gasket with non slippery sealant like Loctite 518, Silicone just works like grease and the gasket slips out again.
  • The bolt above the oily patch may be leaking down its threads and dripping to where you see the oil.

If the head gasket leaks oil it will be from the front middle below the exhaust ports. That is the only area that carries oil. The same sealing ring can also sometimes leak into cylinder 2 or 3. Anywhere else will leak coolant (or water if you've just bought the car).

The oil in the pictures is nowhere near enough to cause so much oil loss you are reporting. I would check if there is any oil patch under the car when you leave the car overnight. If there is no patch I would expect the oil is actually burned. Look out for blue smoke out of the exhaust at start up and under load.

Hi I'm new here and I just seen this you said to take of the cover coil pack my punto is a 1996 75 SX should I remove my one?

I have heard people saying this is an issue causing coils to overheat... In my view its complete rubbish, never had it happen whilst owning countless FIRE engined cars.

Hell my old seicento (same engine as punto55) has the cover on and that has a turbo under the bonnet adding huge amounts of heat and its much more tightly packed than a punto bay which is pretty much empty by comparison.

Just leave it, it is fine ;) And you'll know about it pretty quickly if they get water on them cause there is no cover lol

Yeah I've done the rocker cover, I now think the cam seal need's replacing the coil pack side :(

Thanks for your help! the cover on my punto has air vent on it is that normal?
