Loud rattling with warm/hot engine at low revs..

HI,

Having a problem here.. MK2 Sporting 2001.. recently had a cambelt and tensioner, and a new engine head fitted after the cambelt snapped.

I'm getting a loud rattling noise coming from the engine area after I've driven the car for a decent period of time (20-30 mins) when I'm stationary and idling the engine in neutral. It's completely random, but once it starts it doesn't seem to stop.. The noise continues in 1st and 2nd gear, but with NO loss of performance at all.

I can only think it must be an overheating problem.. I've also spotted steam coming from the top of the bonnet a few times when the problems have occured.

I've bled the coolant yesterday which doesn't seem to have helped..

cat's in the exhaust manifold on mk2's isn't it?

my cat rattles occasionally when warm. Tells me when to slow down... lol

I wouldn't had an idea.. the rattling is quite obvious though, can be heard over the radio playing.

where is the sound coming from under the bonnet. if it's right behind the radiator, it could be a couple of things.

Cat (catalytic converter) could be faulty

Exhaust manifold could be loose and rattling on exhaust (if it's had a new head then it may not have been put on properly)

Tools under the bonnet left on the engine?

A snake? (joke)

Thanks for your time. I tried to lure the snake with a dead field mouse, but it didn't appear, to it must be something else.

I'm having it go down to a garage tomorrow morning to get it checked out.

Turns out it was the cooling fan motor. New cooling fan needed.
