Punto JTD brakes

This is getting to be a problem page for me!!

My punto jtd seems to engage the abs really quickly when braking heavily.

Also when braking there is occasionally a vibrating sound coming from the brakes.

Any ideas why? I have had a look and the discs are worn so this could be a quick fix.

Also, how long to your pads/discs normally last?

Re: Punto JTD brakes

Hi mate,

When you say your ABS is cutting in when you break hard....that is normal! Or do you mean its coming in at low speed? Ie when coming to a stop at a junction? In which case, it could be a broken or faulty abs sensor.

The vibrating from the breaks could be warped disks. Check the run-out on them, and if they are worn, you might aswell replace them anyway.

The break pads on my JTD normally last about 20k miles.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Re: Punto JTD brakes

Your discs are probably warped mate witch is may be causing your ABS to act dodgey, sometimes you will feel the break pedal juddering when your applying your breaks or as you have said hearing a vibrating sound coming from the brakes, also you can get knocking noises from the warped discs when turning around bends.

ABS intervention at low speed braking is not usually caused by a sensor, but i would get your discs replaced first and see if your still having the problem with your ABS and if so come back and post your problem, also you should always replace your pads with your new discs, you dont have to if you dont want to i didnt but its the right way to do it.

I agree the most likely cause of this particular case is warped disks due to the other factors, however, its a very common symptom of a faulty ABS sensor for the ABS to cut in constantly when breaking at very low speeds. (for example, when coming to a stop at a junction) This is caused by the sensor giving a false signal the control unit making it think that that particular wheel is no longer rotating (IE locked up/skidding). Depending on what type of ABS is employed (electromagnetic pulse etc) it can even be caused by simply dirt on the sensor.

In this case, I would check the run out on the disks, as this will show if either of them are warped. If they are not warped then my next port of call would be the sensors.

Either way, let us know how you get on,
Alan
