2001 punto jtd

I have a 2001 punto jtd, fuel consumption has decreased dramaticaly, had a diagnostics checked and it came up with fault code U1614. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this or what the problem is?

that code isn't on Autodata, are you sure it's the right code?

What sort of mpg are you getting now? Does the car seem to run ok apart from it using more fuel than normal?

Re: 2001 punto jtd

Ah, i will have to check the code then, but the message said 'Cam communication fault'.

Previously i was getting between 52-58mpg and now im getting between 43-47mpg - and other than that there has been no change in performance etc.

Any ideas?

Re: 2001 punto jtd

Hi mate,

Have you been sitting in lots of traffic or doing lots of stop/start driving recently? Mine sometimes goes as low as that if i spend all day sitting in traffic.

And was the fault indefinitely "cam" communication fault, or could it have been "CAN" communication fault?

Re: 2001 punto jtd

It could have been either as it was a friend of mine who ran the diagnostics.

Either way, what does it mean? and what is the problem?!

Most of my journeys are over 25 miles and mainly on motorways so usually going a decent speed most of the time.

Re: 2001 punto jtd

CAN communication fault means it's having trouble connecting to the ECU via the CAN interface...

Basically it's either not plugged in properly or there is a problem with the reader or connector...

Could also be that he's using the wrong interface to connect to the ECU perhaps? But never used diagnostic software so not sure if this is possible?

Re: 2001 punto jtd

in English please?

Basically the reader is having problems connecting to the car's computer if you are getting a CAN communication error message

Re: 2001 punto jtd

CAN is the way that various components on the car talk to eachother. You can get CAN readers that can read these messages, and show the data on a PC. I think the stored fault code will be an in car one (ie to do with the cars CAN communication), and not to do with the interface used to read the codes, as if you use the wrong interface, it simply wouldn't connect to the ECU at all.

If you have a CAN communication fault, then it would suggest that there is a problem with the way something is communicating with the ECU/body computer in the car.

If we can get the correct fault code then this may shed some more light on things.

Re: 2001 punto jtd

i will ask my mate to put the car through the diagnostics again tomorrow to get the fault code.

so we are looking at a electrical problem?

when he done the diagnostics he checked the fuel injection system and said that the volume of fuel being injected on tick over was between 10-12 however when the revs were increased to 2000 rpm the figure dropped to between 8-9.5. i gather from this that when ticking over more fuel is being consumed than when the revs are increased.

his idea was that perhaps the 'cold start' setting was on constantly?
