Exclamation Clutch Problems - Now Fixed

I’m new to this forum, so I thought that I would drop you all a little line about the fun and games I’ve just had with my Mk 1 Punto 85 SX.

A couple of weeks ago my clutch pedal started clicking around the biting point (as if it was catching on car mat, but wasn’t).
I lubricated the pedal fulcrum but with no improvement.
After about a week of driving the clicking disappeared but the biting point moved to about 2-3mm from the floor and it became very difficult to change gear.
My first thought was hydraulic problems/failure. I had changed the slave cylinder approx 1yr ago – common problem. This was all fine, so I bled the system. No air bubbles present and noticed full travel on the actuating arm.

Therefore problem had to be clutch thrust release bearings. Local independent garage wanted approx £350 inc.VAT ; FIAT quoted £400 – 500 (said it was a 4-5hr job).
So I used Mr Clutch in Aldershot, Hampshire, they changed the whole clutch mechanism within 2hrs and charged £201.24 inc.VAT + 2yr/20,000 mile warranty.

It turned out to be a very sorry looking thrust release bearing, the original clutch plate and pressure plate was still in good condition but was changed anyway.
They said this is a common problem on Fiat’s and mine was the third Fiat that day. They were very courteous and did a fantastic speedy job.

The moral to the tale, it pays to shop around – sometimes the cheapest option can be the best !!!
