Question HELP!! Miles from petro are too low then predicted

(new user!!)hello my parents just got me A fiat punto mk 3/2.5 "04 plate" 1.2 active 8v (dunno as some internet site say it is a 2.5 mk or a mk3, all i know it has the rectangular bulbs).... i luv the punto as it luks well good and its in mint condition but the problem that i am having is reaaly pissing me off becuase last week i put in £20 of petrol roughly about 20 or 22 litres of unleaded, the computer says trip 250 (read the book and this means i should get 250 miles out of it) or more but i actually get 120 miles or lower out of 20 quids of petrol..iv been on a site and they'v calculated that my car does 29mpg but it should be doing something in the fourties..

now anyone who has had this problem or know what i can do to increase the mileage from petrol please help as my mum n dad are getting annoyed at me for choosing this car as the mpg is lower becuase i used to drive my dads carina 2 litre diesel and that done about 240 miles from £20's or diesel.

please help, o and please give me tips on keeping the car in good condtion the first obviously keeping it clean lol...Safe.

tell em to chill.

On a run in top gear you will get in the 40s but around town 29s ok. My first car was a Mini and i used to get less than 20 round town.

Around town i roughly get 35mpg from my 1.2 8v,
About 50mpg A-Road Driving,
And 46Mpg Motorway driving.

Averages to about 42-43 mpg.

And i drive like a boy racer.

Reset the ECU, it gave me another 5mpg doing this.

Your punto will be the MK2B also known as MK2.5, that is pretty poor fuel economy for a 1.2 8v has it had a service at all? If not i would give it an oil and filter change, spark plugs, air filter, those can make a diffrence on your fuel consumption, is your tyres at the right pressure? i would also do as owen has said reset the ecu, disconnect the battery, black comes off first then red, then leave it over night so all the power in the ECU will drain and will reset back to factory standards, when reconnecting battery red gos on first and black gos on last, while you do the above make sure your key is (not) in the ignition.

Re: HELP!! Miles from petro are too low then predicted

I just brought it from a dealer…(the dealer being a proper knob, sold it to my parents without any headlights, I got them fitted and showed him the bill and he flipped when he had to put his hands in his pockets and reimburse me for the costs. Rubbish customer service never go to him www.rightpricecars4u.com all his customer service feedback are rubbish ). Its has a full service history and all the tyres are at the right tyre pressure (I think) tyres are also new. Did u notice any problems after when u disconnected it??

I assume when your saying "wihtout headlights" your meaning they weren't working right ?? If they were indeed missing then why buy the car and then get them fitted and then ask the dealer to pay for the bill - why didnt he fit them prior to the car being taken by your parents ?? I think you may also want to think of alternative words to describe your frustration and descriptions of the dealer

Re: HELP!! Miles from petro are too low then predicted

well at the time we ddnt think there wouldnt be no bulbs in the actual headlight, but after just looking at the headlights 4 days after purchasing the car i founf out that there wernt no bulbs in them, we cudnt return the car becuase he had sold our car which we gave as p/x. so we gt them fitted by a proper private dealer and then got the dealer who sold the car to us to pay for the bill as he said he would do...he actually admitted that his mechanic had taken the bulbs out to put in another car....

A dealer who takes things out a car for another one while trying to sell it i wouldint trust them, i dont believe there gave the car a service, i would be looking for proof, see what kind of condition the air filter, spark plugs are in and does the oil filter look new, no you shouldint get any problems after disconnectin and reconnectin.

Do the ECU reset first. If this doesn't help then try a bottle of injector cleaner in a tank of super unleaded. ECU reset again and if that doesn't sort it get the car serviced with new oil/air/plugs.
