Just been to see a 2012 Punto Twinair with the Mrs today and it’s now joined the fleet.

Was lucky to know a fellow FF member who lives round the corner from the seller to give me reassurance on the un conventional engine note. He has a twinair (but not a FAIT) and said it’s all normal. Without the nod I don’t think I’d have been convinced (Thanks Tom!!).

Everything looked good and after a short test drive I was happy to buy it – the Mrs was happy to have it as her new car…

I’ve driven it back (Around 100 miles) and it’s way more fun than my Panda Sporting, but not quite hitting the MPG - Ah well should have checked the tyre pressure first.

After reading the manual I see it should have a stop start. The best I can get is a Beep when I put the handbrake on sometimes. I see the button for S/S and it activates, de activates but don’t stop / start at all with handbrake on, in neutral and clutch up.

Looking around here on the MK5 Punto section I’ve seen it’s not unusual for SS to not work so I’m not that bothered – Don’t think the Mrs will like it anyway.

But I’m interested to know which code reader is worth buying for a 2012 Twinair. I could do with one that can reset the service indicator as I’m the type of guy who gets involved with servicing.

It may help point me in the right direction to fix the S/S (maybe it's just a recalibration of a sensor)

Have a look at multiecuscan - diagnostic software for Fiat/Alfa/Lancia cars supporting a rich set of features. It will do service resets and read/reset fault codes, but much more besides.

You will need a laptop to install it on, an ELM 327 interface to connect it to the OBD socket and, for some of the control units on the Punto, a yellow adapter cable. Both the ELM 327 and the adapter cable are available from eBay - though avoid the cheap Chinese ones as they've been found to have problems - see this thread for more about that and recommendations of two in the UK that are ok.

The MES software is free to download and run in simulation mode but for full functionality you will need to buy a license (50 EUR).

MES is quite a popular choice with members of the Forum - if you post a request someone local might even be willing to give you a demo?

I keep toying with the idea but don't have a loptop Maybe I need to bite the bullet but have just shelled out for the car so may be a while.

I know that the Panda Sporting took a step change in my driving style to get much past 60mpg and a keen eye on tyre pressure.

Was expecting better from the new Punto. Maybe an oil change will help - Oh and get the stop start working too.

What about a cheap/used laptop for mes, it runs fine and having a dedicated garage laptop means it doesn't have to be treated like the best China, I'm sure the min specs are available to view to ensure it's old enough to be cheap and fast enough to work

Yer your probabley right on a second hand one. I need one to run an eprom reader / burner for another hobbie. Can't get my head round having a second hand PC and having a fresh licensed install of windows 7... How?

Maybe stick with XP and keep it offline, but I'd also like the mancave laptop for downloading IC data sheets too so its probabley going to be windows 7.
