Hello,

When the temperature is a bit cold (below about 2°C), changing first to second become hard. The gear lever is hard to put out of the 1st, and then hard to put in 2nd
If I shift from 1st to 3rd it is still hard to remove the 1st but the 3rd goes like in butter.
To downshift it is the same, a little bit hard to put the second. The first its hard to say because I put it only at stop.

After some minutes, all goes ok.
I think it is gearbox related, because only 1st and 2nd have problem. This should not be the clutch, other gears are fine, even the reverse
The car has over 6000km, and was never drived hard, especially at cold (and it is hard to drive hard with 78PS :p )

How it goes for you ? Especially people with the 1.2, 1.4 8v and 1.4 16V (all gearbox are the same basis, C514. And same clutch system, turbos and diesel have different box and clutch slave cylinder)

Thank in advance for your feedbacks ;)

Can't say that I've had much issues with mine, mind you IIRC mine is a C510 though? Was the C514 fitted to the mk2's and mk1's aswell?

As for the problem, if it only exists on 1st and 2nd, it could be a faulty selector, cant see it being much more as 1st isn't on a syncromesh?

Mines been fine, infact i almost have the exact opposite experience... and it's the same engine as yours, so i assume same gearbox ? Only 3k miles on mine though.

One thing I've noticed, is that it never goes into 1st "easily", it's as if it hesitates slightly and says "are you REALLY sure you want to go into this gear?", then just slides in after half a second.

Now, whilst i'm sure my car doesn't have a mind of it's own.... is this some sort of safety mechanism to prevent you ramming it into 1st by accident, while doing 20/30 mph ? :D

Thank you for your replies !

scoop987, my dealer already adjusted the selector cable, goes fine when hot or when the weather is not so cold ( 5°C or above).

cjdl, Yes we have the same "mechanical" car. The GBT edition is just better in terms of equipment. We have the same 1.4 8V engine and associated gearbox.

Good to hear you with gearbox running fine ! Have you sometimes cold weather, with temperature of about 0°C or below ?

For the first gear, it is generally hard to put in when running, on all cars. In fact, 1st is made to put at stop or at really low speed.
You can put it when you driving at higher speed, but to avoid a lot of wear you should double clutch (with rev matching to accelerate primary shaft ).

I've had this problem for a while too, just 1st and 2nd gear and I don't remember noticing it in the summer. Gear selector been checked and is fine too. I've got 8v 1.4 (60plate).

Yes, it's been down to about -10°C a few times... but we had a spell in Nov/Dec where it was getting down to -5°C and no higher than +2°C for about 2 weeks solid.... everything was fine.

What I meant about the sticky first was... say I'm approaching a stop line / junction I know I need to stop at, I clutch-in about 10mph, and attempt to put it in 1st, in anticipation that I'll be able to drive off immediately. That's when it kinda sticks slightly.

If i wait until I come to a dead stop, then try to put it into 1st, it's fine. I hadn't noticed this with my previous 2 cars (MK2B & GP), so figured it must have been a 'new' development.

It seems like a good thing anyway, as unlikely as it is, I'd rather not accidentally stick it in 1st whilst running !

For your issue though.... bottom line is your car is still under warranty, so I'd take it back to the dealer, tell them to fix it, and tell them you expect a courtesy car meanwhile :)

Ok thanks for this information. Gear selector, the part mounted on the gearbox ? Do you have more details ?

I'd be lubricating or renewing the cables.
Can be an issue, but as the car is new and cables are in good shape.

Ok I see. It can be a new feature that the gearbox dont allow to put on the gear if speed is too high.

For my car this is what I will do. I'm quite sure that my dealer will solve this.
But it is always intersting to know how other cars works, thanks all for your feedbacks ;)
