head gasket replaced - what else should be checked?

Hi,

Thanks for all your help with the overheating problem - Ive got the headgasket fixed now...

I want to make sure that the cause has been sorted not just the symptom.

What else should I ask the garage to do/check?

and...

can I change the thermostat myself? I gather they're about £12 - where do I get it from?

thanx in advance

well thats what i would be asking the garage.
you need to confirm the cooling system was checked for leaks, operation etc.
no point doing the head and not finding the cause

The garage will probly say they dont know the cause of it, if they do though thats good gives you a little peice of mind of what caused it, find out what all they replaced if it was only the HG. Cambelt should have been changed and after an HG is blown other following should be replaced as well spark plugs, oil change and oil filter, and you should get a coolant system flush, and if you wanted could replace the thermostat yourself 15min job and yes there about £12..

Re: head gasket replaced - what else should be checked?

Hi,

Thanks so much for your help guys :-)

I know the oil filter and oil have been changed - think the timing was tuned but the cambelt not replaced. Will ask about the plugs and the coolant system.

Think the thermostat is easy to do! I can do that myself (does it have to be done asap?)

Is the coolant drain something that I can do DIY? or does it have to be done at the garage? How much should it cost me?

sorry for all the Qs

If you dont get any problems, then you dont really have to replace it such as if your heaters are on warm and blowing cold air this may be a thermostat problem, keep an eye on the temp gauge for couple days see how that gos if you dont have the gauage, a red ciricle light will come on when overheating if this accurs turn engine off let it cool down, but if you take it out anyways you can test it see if its working correctly with boiling water in a sauce pan instead of wasting £12 lol..

It takes 30 minutes tops. If you flush the engine you have to get new clips to hold the hose to the radiator, just need to buy a jubile clip to replace the bottom hose clip as it breaks first time you ever remove housing. A good motor factors will assist you in clips, coolant, fiat recommend dilution of your coolant at 50% water to coolant when topping back up..
