Question warning symbol on dashboard

Hi All

I would be most grateful for some help on this point - the wheels on my punto seem to have jammed and the red steering wheel light is on on the dashboard. I can turn the steering wheel to the right but not to the left and am getting a bit desperate. Appreciate that this may be a pretty straightforward problem, but since the car didn't come with an instruction manual as I bought it second hand, I can't tell whether this is a crucial problem or whether if I wrench the wheel hard enough, something good will happen!

Any opinions or suggestions most welcome.

thanks

Re: warning symbol on dashboard

punto princess we know. but calm down, T knows his fiats he works in a fiat dealer (a good one not the usual stealership that you find).

punto oktb, I don't quite understand what you mean 'the wheels have stopped turning'.

do you mean that the steering is jammed up??
Are you sure its not the steering lock first? because even when the electric steering goes up the creak you should still be able to turn the steering wheel.

yes new steering columns are pricey. very. looking £600 from a fiat dealership (HAS To be aligned by them, else it won't work).

Re: warning symbol on dashboard

Punto princess if you read the guide fully you would see that it might be a speed sensor fault

Unhappy Re: warning symbol on dashboard

I was only trying to help not trying to offend anyone. I was jus saying what i had been told and what seems to work with my car. I thought it might have been some help considering it was the only answer I got. Sorry if that was the wrong thing to do! Im sorry I cant share my view as everybody seems to get offended, now everyone's sending ne messages saying its rubbish when i was just saying what I had been told!

Re: warning symbol on dashboard

Fair enough but as with anything you have to fully test the system and interogate it with suitable equipment. Its all good and well saying its a column fault but it may not be,I have fitted loads of speed sensor wiring kits that produce exactly the same fault,ie steering light on - steering goes stiff, this is because the steering ecu uses the speed signal via the CAN network.
What if you went into a garage saying you want a column fitted, they fit it & its no different what would you say to the garage after all you told them to fit it on hearsay (wether its right or wrong) when they present you with the bill, would you pay it?.You have to be 100% sure in diagnosis,90% sure may well result in one unhappy customer in ten.
As for the columns themselves I know of 3 possible faults that can go wrong with them so telling everyone it is a certain component is wrong and may lead to incorrect diagnosis/fitment of a non-faulty part.
The messages sent to you were because you kept posting/hijacking threads,by all means give your views.
