(T) extra forward gear no reverse

just put a 75 gearbox into daryls car a 60. the 75 linkage bar looked diffrent so i fitted that on,
now i have no reverse where reverse is supposed to be is another forward gear
wtf going on there then

You haven't got 5 reverse gears & 1 forward? Or if you've got 6 forward gears you'll have one 'duplicated' ratio.

didnt they make a 6 speed Punto at some point maybe you got one of them

Bit like a American Stock car, they don't need a reverse

I'm pretty sure all Sportings were 6 speed

hmm what sort of gear is it?eg a low 1st like gear or a higher 4th type gear?
wondering if its snicking into a forward gear due to the different bar set up

its defently a 5 speed box and was working fine in the donor car, i couldnt fit it with the old linkage, as when i did gearstick was stuck right over on the drivers side

i dont know what gear is where reverse is supposed to be,as i havent took it for a drive

According to my owners handbook the only Mk1 to get 6 speeds (in '97/'98) is the 55 6 speed, the sporting has 60/75 5 speed box with a shorter final drive & taller 5th gear.

it could be a six speed box, but AFAIK reverse is still in the same place, just a bit closer to driver as 6th is where Rev normally is.
I've got a 6speeder sat here, waiting for my current clutch to die (it just keeps going!!! mk1 clutchs so splash on mk2 clutchs ), they look almost exactly the same from the outside.

maybe it had a 6speed fitted to it at some time or another, in which case you DO need the linkages, as they are slightly different. sure you didn't fit one or another linkage upside down, or on the wrong side of a bearing.

so maybe you've mounted the linkages wrong, or you have made up some weird combo of the old and newer linkages that doesn't work

Cut rectangle out of floor in driver's footwell. Fix hinges to rear edge. When you want to go backwards, put car in neutral, open flap, place feet through hole on to ground and push backwards. Simple really.
