Transmission

Noticed slight increase in noise when clutch no longer depressed when in neutral - presumably a fix for this involves messing with the transmission (i.e. money) - can I not care until something goes wrong or gets louder or do I need to get it sorted?
Oh, and by the way - the rubber plug/bung on the top of the transmission fell out on both Punto and the Cinq we had before - whats it for? (sorry I'm asking 2 Q's - bad netiquette!)
Thanks

The noise you refer to is usually caused by low tranny fluid, or clutch bearing;). The rubber plug looks into the cluch area, never figured the reason for it but it is usefull to see how worn the clutch is.:D

If you have any questions don´t be afraid, ask away. I´ll be glad to help.

OK, thanks - I guess I'll start by checking the fluid. Theres a rather obvious hex-key shaped plug on the front side for topping up etc (with a funnel presumably), and if I can find the draining plug I might just renew it.
Do I need any little washers or anything or is this a fairly easy unscrew, wipe, and replace procedure? (... ponders most level bit of driveway)

Drain plug should be locted by the left side driveshaft, it´s fairly straight forward job a bit messy mind you:D. you can use a funnel with a small lenght of hose attached it will make life easier(do not overpour fluid in or you´ll have quite a mess to clean;))

If you have any questions don´t be afraid, ask away. I´ll be glad to help.

OK, well I've changed it completely rather than top up.
The job wasn't too hard - just a bit time consuming getting the car level. The old transmission oil wasn't hugely dirty - just a bit darker really. When I removed the filler plug nothing spilt out so it might have been a tad low - hard to tell I guess.
There are no discernable differences to the noise though (I think), which is disappointing.
Can I safely live with the noise for now or do you think I should be taking action?
Thanks
