Punto Rear Lights, what fits what and how to make them dark

MK1 Lights
these are the same on all mk1's with a roof, you tint them as below.

There has been a few threads asking about Rear Lights on a Punto MK2 so this thread is being made to outline the basics about rear lights on the Punto mk2.

3 Door version and 5 Door Version

The lights from the 3 door and 5 door models of Puntos are not inter changeable as the whole rear end of the car is a totally different shape.

Tinted/Smoked Lights

a popular modification to do to the rear lights is to tint or Smoke them. this requires some tint spray and depending on personal preference some lacquer. People tend to use Savage tint spray to do this which can be purchased from eBay and certain motor shops. Obviously if the lights get tinted then lacquered it will make them shiny and if they are left just tinted then they will be matte black.

There are some legal issues with tinting with regards to covering up the reflectors. Officially it is illegal to cover up the reflectors (at the bottom of the light) with tint spray as they need to be seen at all times. However some people do have this covered up and get away with it. This is to be done at your own risk!

Some examples of tinted rear lights....

these have been tinted and lacquered and the reflectors have been left uncovered.

These have just been lacquered and left Matte Black and reflectors covered up

And one more for luck

And some smoked ones........

(i cant find any smoked ones at the moment. please let me know if you have a pic of your smoke lights) (it has to be hosted by FF)

MK2B Lights

Another option is to swap the standard MK2 lights for the rear lights off an MK2B. These lights have a clear indicator on them meaning you don't have orange on your rear lights. Again this is down to personal preference whether you prefer the orange or clear/white look. If you are interested in purchasing these then the best place to look would be eBay, a scrap yard or find someone who is breaking a Punto MK2B.

the MK2B rear lights....

Other Options

There are a few aftermarket rear lights for the Punto such as Lexus lights. These do not go down to well on the forum as they are associated with corsa's saxo's and chavs. The Lexus lights are available on eBay but have been known to not fit properly and let water in. Another option is to put tights over the standard rear lights to give a smoked effect. This method is easily damaged and again doesn't look very good.

Please feel free to add any other info I may have left out and a Mod will hopefully tidy it up. Also thank you to the people whose pictures have been used!
There are no lexarse lights that look good on any punto so dont even think about getting them

i thought the mk2b had the rear fog and reverse on the smaller tailgate lights that the mk2 doesnt have on its tailgate, so that means fitting mk2b lights will leave you with no rear fog light or reverse light unless you fit a mk2b tailgate. without a foglight you cant pass MOT.

or am i mistaken and the mk2b's tailgate lights dont illuminate (in which case wtf is the point of them?)

Also forgot to mention that MK2 and MK2B lights are a straight swap providing they have the same amount of doors on the car.

Tidy up time Dave

Re: Punto Rear Lights, what fits what and how to make them dark

If you tint the reflectors aswell you can easily get round this by getting some little stick on reflectors come MOT time if you are worried about not passing because of no rear reflectors

Stick them where ever. As long as you have red reflectors showing to the rear it doesnt matter where they are.

Re: Punto Rear Lights, what fits what and how to make them dark

The layers of spray just depend on how dark you want them. Take the lights off the car. Lay them down next to each other and spray them both evenly and at the same time so you get them both tinted to the same degree. Leave about 20-30mins between coats and then stop spraying when they are dark enough for you.
