40mm drop is ok with standard shocks,
springs are about £90 - £ 140 plus fitting

Re: 35 or 40mill drop

loads of people have gone 50mm drop with standard shocks, ive never actually heard anyone having problems with standard shocks. My friends been runnign 50mm drop on his car with standard shocks for nearly a year and no problems yet. A lot of talk in my opinion.

Re: 35 or 40mill drop

I would say get some sports shocks aswell, it will cost you more but worth i think. Dependant on age your shocks may not be in the best condition plus a nice new set of shocks and springs makes your car look ace. I got PI suspension kit for the mk2 99> for £300 delivered

Coilovers are the best solution.

If you can't afford coilovers then get a decent spring and shock combo. I wouldn't lower a car on standard shocks because I like it to handle well and not have an overly harsh and crashy ride.

I do have a JTD, they don't handle too badly on coilovers that have been setup properly...
