I made this guide as a way to show you how easy it is to change an alternator
All cars are slightly different, your may vary so be prepared

An Alternator is a High Amperage device Connected to the battery
There is a Risk of been Shocked - so I advise you take precautions

1) Good battery should have at least 12,6 volts (12,5 and less requires proper charging and after that checking electrolyte density - most important parameter).
If density is not correct, you can easily recover battery by replacing electrolyte (and making desulphurization procedure if needed).
Of course, to do this, you should use classic, serviceable battery, not modern, so called "non-service" type (which main purpose is, to make you buy new one, and make you think, that most things are "impossible" to fix).
In most cases there is no need to buy new battery if it's "bad". Check also current consumption at engine switched off (much more than 30-50 mA will be cause of draining out battery).

2) Alternators (voltage regulators inside) have temperature-dependent characteristics!
Reason for that is to enforce proper charging process in winter time and avoid boiling out battery electrolyte when it's hot.
Example (sorry, it's not in english, but I think, clear enough to understand).

So, mind the temperature of alternator before you judge voltage level as "good" or "bad".

3) Wonder why you guys, almost always (on forums like that) forcing people to replace entire things like starters and alternators, while these are reparable devices!
Most problems with alternators rely on voltage regulator and/or bearings. Maybe diodes (bridge) sometimes fails.

Voltage regulator - quick and easy to replace (no special tools needed).


Bridge (you may need soldering gun to replace it - depend on alternator model).

Bearings may be Pain In The A... if you try to do this first time in your life (and don't even have basic tools like bearings puller), and you have "substitute" instead of original Bosch or Magneti-Marelli alternator (because there will be problem with purchasing correct bearings - proper clearances/fitting - like in this example, again, not in english: fiatpunto.com.pl/topic37324.html - but "a picture is worth a thousand words").

So, it can be successfully repaired (try not to do "shortcuts"/"cut corners" like that - by replace whole thing).

We used to repair starters/alternators but these days pattern starters/alternators are so cheap it doesn't make economic sense to repair. Also people want their cars fixed now and don't want to be off the road so won't wait until parts are sourced.
