I assume Fiatecuscan guides you through the process. I will also read the fault codes.

Thanks to you as well Forest 159 for a great guide. Given that this problem is so common I would have thought this should be made into a sticky

cheers

Graham
If you get stuck just message me but its straight forward re-calibrating as long as the engine is running and steering wheel is straight.

cheers Chris

Give it a go though you have nothing to lose ?

it only needs calibration when the column is changed..

if only the motor is removed even if the position changes the ecu will recalibrate after a few miles of driving.. i've repaired quite a few and never bothered to recalibrate (i have the means) and they all work fine

the basic system is the same, just a bit more reliable so far... probably improved quality control

Thanks for the reply so would you advise giving this ago first before forking out for a new column?

the error code will give you clues to the cause, bad solder joints and dead relays will usually give low voltage errors.. if the error is torque sensors then it's a new column since it has no known repair yet..

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

[QUOTE=sab8th;2825335]The power steering failed on my daughter's Mk2 a couple of weeks back. I ran through the advice in the first post resoldering all the relay joints, but to no avail - the damned thing still wasn't working. I checked the relays with a meter and discovered that one was faulty - it had shorted![QUOTE=sab8th;2825335]

I have this same problem. "CITY" on the dashboard is still on and a steering wheel light came on. Can this indicate the source of the fault? I am new to this sort of thing although I had an 1100 (bless her) before. No gimmicks etc. So I have to be sure without going to all this hassle. Thanks guys...

Very helpful this forum.

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

Firstly, this is the reason why I registered as I have this issue on my wife's Car.

Secondly I would like to thank the originator of the post for an excellent tutorial and fantastic step by step guide to how to resolve the problem.

now the question, how difficult is it to get the 3rd Hex head bolt out, ( 1 closest to front of the car) 2 are easily accessible but the 3rd there doesn't seem much space at all. Because the plastic of the dash seems to be in the way .

Re: Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays

Hi! My parents has the same problem on their Punto, the servo is not working, most notably when it is colder, but it also turns off in the summer and hot. The steering wheel red light turns on, there is a click sound, and the servo is gone, the steering is extremely heavy. If I turn off the engine and remove the key, then I turn on again, it usually works again, the red warning light disappears, and the servo is working normally, but sometimes only for few minutes, sometimes for days. There is a strange rattle sound from the steering wheel, especially when it is in the middle, and moved to right and left a little, then it is behaving like the servo motor is trying to calibrate it, if you understand what I mean to say. When I turn it all the way to one side, then it is also rattling and moving a little, usually these are the situations when it turns off. It doesn't help if CITY is on or off.
I went to a garage to check it, but they said it is a common problem, and it can not be repaired, needs to be replaced, which costs very much. I can't remember what part they said that needs to be replaced. Anyway, they did it within 10 minutes, I do not think they have checked anything, jut ran a diagnostics and said replacing all.

Do you think re-soldering the relays might help, based on my description? Perhaps I should immediately buy new releys to replace them? Or it is likely that the car has a bigger problem and needs a more expensive part?
I found this page on a Hungarian forum, are these the relays I need?
lr2a-12w Could you confirm that these are what I need? Since I'm new on the forum, I can not post the link

Many thanks for all your help!
