Lightbulb Introduction and required parts

Here`s a little explanation of how I created monitor fascia panel and installed for carputer use. First of all, there is no such thing as 2din fascia for punto mk2 and if someone wants to put a screen, it can only be done with custom fascia. The bad thing is that you will need to sacrifice front vents. I must say that I never used them

I haven`t worked with polyester or any kind of cement and sand papers before this. The only thing that I do was to look at few howtos regarding that subject so typical basic knowledge of that materials is enough for everyone.

Good thing to mention at this beggining is that if you choose to install carputer like I did, you must have an amplifier. Classic speaker-output from motherboard does not give enough power for speakers to work.

The parts that I used for building my carputer are:

- 7" tft touchscreen monitor
- Intel D945GCLF2D mini ITX motherboard with atom dualcore 1.6ghz cpu inside
- m3-atx power supply
- 2gb ddr2
- 250GB SATA2 WD hdd
- other parts like usb soudblaster play! (better output), usb gps receiver, usb bluetooth adapter for handsfree, usb fm adapter, usb elm327 interface for diagnostics and real time parameters.

For monitor fascia you will need:

- one polyester set (includes 1L of resin, small bottle of hardener, brush and polyester texture)
- some kind of polyester filling cement
- few sandpapers with various grades (80, 160, 400, 600)
- small piece of styrofoam
- alu foil
- primer and paint

The tools required for building fascia are standard ones which everyone has in their garage (screwdriver, knife, hammer, etc).

Very nice! I've wanted a carputer for a while now, Defintaley something that'll get done now. I was going to use a laptop base with screen removed hidden somewhere to make the hardware a bit more secure.

Seriously you should do what that chap says and create the facias for people..

They can then purchase them off you and buy there own monitor and computer.

Potential here

Re: Punto mk2 installing carputer and monitor fascia panel

Thanks guys! Unfortunately, I do not have enough spare time for that action, I can only help here on forum if someone decides to make it. Also, I`m from Serbia and sending anything from here is too complicated :/ It takes more time to send package than to make fascia

Btw, this job described above is really not that hard as it looks and you cannot damage anything if you have basic knowledge of car/computer wiring. If you accidentally mess something with polyester and add too much of it, you`ll have to sand the fascia little more. In worst case you can buy other default fascia on any scrapyard, so go on guys, try it and you will see!

My advice for all of you who do not have any polyester experience, is to try first on some other plastics. I used two empty cd cases and I "soldered" them with polyester for testing purposes, just to see how it reacts and how it responses to sanding. After that, you will be ready for some serious polyester actions, like modifying fascias, panels, speaker boxes, etc ...

Re: Punto mk2 installing carputer and monitor fascia panel

Started making mine today Got lots and lots of sanding still to do before it's nice and smooth. I'll try and get a pic up tomorrow of my progress before I start painting.

Unlike yours I left the parts of the vents to the left and right of the screen on show for now. Realised afterwards that where the mobo will sit is on top of the large vent panel so I may not even be able to use them, we'll see how that one goes.

Got all the PC bits I want to use too so got all that to get installed and setup. Have you gone to centrafuse 3.0 yet? If so how is it?

Re: Punto mk2 installing carputer and monitor fascia panel

The screen I'm using is in a holder like the one used above so it can be removed when not in use, although be a bit fiddly once it's in the new facia.

Although as in the guide pics the screen has a 'built in' look and not like an expensive easy to steal stereo with a screen.

Re: Punto mk2 installing carputer and monitor fascia panel

This is indeed pretty cool, but I don't want to lose my front vents .

Assuming I pop the carputer itself elsewhere, what do you think to extending the screen up, instead of down? So it sticks out above the console slightly. Doable? I'm a bit nervy about just taking the saw to my beloved car

Re: Punto mk2 installing carputer and monitor fascia panel

Raising the screen might create a much more difficult task of making a nice facia. Possible, but Personnally I don't think it would look nice with a screen poking up out the dash, might aswell get a stereo pop out screen instead.

Have left filler to set on my facia and in the mean time have installed 7 on my PC and getting it ready to go straight into the car Hopefully have my facia ready to paint if not finished today...yay.
