Hi I have a 1998 MK1 60SX, fiat punto, I have recently been checking the air filter and I have noticed that there is engine oil in the air filter compartment, can any one give me pointer to the problem ?

Is it getting oily all around or just in one spot? If you have a lot of blowby and are getting excessive amounts of oil in it, then you will see one oily spot on the side of the filter thats nothing to worry about. However, if the filter is oily on the inside this indicates a major engine malfunction. Usually bad rings or a blown piston. But, in both cases, it is an indication of a worn engine.

Hi I have attached a picture of the problem

I have just discovered that my 1997 70sx turbo diesel has the same problem, i have been told that it could be oil being splashed up from the turbo, is this a major problem?

I have just spoken to someone at my local garage, a small amount of oil in the air filter is normal, more so on the diesel versions and if the mileage is high, mines 152k, though even new cars are prone to it!!

I was told to just keep an eye on it, if it gets worse get it checked out properly.
