I bought a punto 2002 punto sporting 3 weeks ago and reckon that my fuel consumption is stupidly high.

Two trips of over 220 miles have resulted in returns of 30 and 31 mpg (calculated by refill in litres to full tank and miles travelled). Both trips were about 75% motorway 25% urban. On each occasion the trip computer indicated average mpgs of around 40 combined.

I have driven conservatively with a constant motorway speed close to 70. Urban driving is also conservative.

This car replaced a punto 1998S 85sx and even driven really hard it never failed to return less than 34 to the gallon and at its best returned 40 to the gallon.

Any suggestions - any likely problems spring to mind? Or is this what is standard? Shouldnt be according to official figures.

cheers

my sei sporting had noticbly improved fuel consumption at high speeds when i fitted my induction kit - might be worth considering

My trip computer seems to usually read a little high, but not that much of a difference. It does seem to be a higher consumption than I would have thought. Did you get the car new? If not how many miles had it done? Any idea of previous history? Also what petrol were you using? You didn't have any windows open did you? Was the urban driving start stop jam type or The official figures are caluclated from emiisions at 56mph for extra-urban, just after the start from cold urban test. If you are doing another longer journey and have the time, then try slowing down to between 60 and 65mph and see if there's much difference.

i have a mk2 punto sporting and fuel economy has improve from 32-35mpg with my induction kit and then when i added a peco full exhaust system it goes up to 37-38 on motorway driving.
