I just got quoted £175 to fit a new clutch on a mk1 punto.
Is that reasonable?

a local garage in the west mids, walsall area

was thinking of replacing it myself as a new clutch only costs £50 odd quid

i was quoted £80 labour last week to fit a clutch in a punto mk1
i dont need it now but been told by a couple of mechanics that was good price.

£80 labour is basically two hours work in a 'proper' garage (not one of these rip merchant dealershts!!) which is about right.
you can either take engine or gearbox out, or both (could even get engine and g'box mounts changed if they feel clunky/looose) either way its a pretty simple thing in a punto as there is loads of space to move around in there.

£175 inc the clutch is also a good price. I would pay it if I wanted mine done. a fiat dealer would charge more like £300.
also ask for your clutch cylinder to be bled, did mine last weekend (thought the clutch was going, spent 10mins bleeding, and now its fab again!!!) will make your car's clutch feel like new!!!!(y)

wow thanks, was looking into bleeding it yesteday, did it for a minute and made a slight difference, wheras i could just about drive it to the garage.
should have bled it longer to see if it would have sorted the problem out :bang:

you need two people, and tightening and loosening the nipple takes the biscuit,
just get a mate with a rubber glove to put their finger over the end!!

got a russian garage to do my clutch while away on my rally trip, they thought they'd try their hand at bleeding a clutch, made a right mess, within 50km I couldn't get in or out of gear!

just got it done, cost £120 also changed my gearbox mount for free as mine was about to collapse.
fook me never realised how nippy it used to be :D

clutchs seems to be one part where fiat, alfa, citroen, peugoet etc all keep costs down. I think its just because companies like luca's make lots of pattern parts.
ford and the like don't have as many pattern parts available, so only genuine ford stuff seems to be available.

£120 is absoltuly bargainous, possibly one of the cheapest clutch jobs yet?
