2001 mk2 sporing

one of my head lights blew so have just replaced the 2 dipped beam lights. now i allways thought that when you switched to full beam that the 2 dipped beam bulbs tunred off untill you switched full beam off. but after changing the bulbs they now stay on.

am i imagining that they turned off??? or have i broked something else if so waht ??

The dipped beam stay on with main beam.
