Having a strange problem with my 1999 punto. Tried to start it today and lights came on in dashboard but nothing happened. Tried it a couple of times and the same thing. I then tried switching on the indicators and sometimes they worked others times they didn't and then the indicator light on the dashboard would flash really quickly. Switched on the window wipers and they were moving really slow. Switched on the hazard lights and a strange noise was comming from the dashboard.

THe car was working fine the last time I drove it. Anybody any ideas what this could be and if it might be another expensive garage visit.
there is a strange noise comming from the dashboard when hazzard light switched on and the indicaters not working, then working, flashing very quickly etc..

The battery in the car is 2 months old as I had major probs with the previous battery. Car was fully serviced last month. When I turn the key in the ignition the milage counter is counting up fairly rapidly and the car is showing 100 MPH

Thanks guys.

Would a broken alternator cause those types of problems?

I've been having the same problems on my 2001 punto. Beginning on September i had my MOT and i asked them to check this problem, i ended up paying for a new battery and starter motor. It's been great ever since until today! Tried to start it in the morning, it didn't. So thinking it was just a morning thing, being cold etc, I went out, came back and had 2 bump it. drove fine! Turned it off and not working again! I heard this is a well known problem in punto's! I love the car though but its fustrating me!
Can anyone help?

I am having same issue with my X-reg punto... What is causing this and what can be done??

earth for interior electrics is in the rear of the car under the left hand side rear of the boot bolted to the inside of the rear cross member

has the original poster checked battery cos until you mentioned 100mph and mileage going up rapidly that's what your symptoms sounded like

the dash miss behaving like that is a new one on me maybe it has gone wrong and is sending out random mesages onto the can network

posably explain the lack of starting as i believe the triger wire for starter is controled buy engine ecu after a given signal over the can lines originating from the dash wired to the ignition switch but i can't be sure on that it may be direct from the ignition switch in witch case it should still crank no matter what the car electronics are doing so this points me towards a posible engine earth problem also there is also a small earth to check on the engine ecu comon for coroding bolted to the outer case behind the throttle body

so things to check first off all

battery charge state 12.76 is a fully charged battery 12.4 id half charged

then the engine earth and also were it bolts to the body the rear earth and ecu case earth
