what is the 'code card' my service book tells me about???

i don't think i got one with my 2001 punto sporting. is it as vital as the red key???

Basically this is a card with a i think its a four digit number on. If your immobiliser fails and you need to start your car, you can start it some how by putting the key in and tapping the excelerator in co-ordination with the numbers on the card. Its like a back door around the immobiliser. My immobiliser packed in the 1st day i had the car, got it home and couldnt start it again, coz i didnt have the card fiat had to come and tow it away

For insurance industry reasons, the CODE cards are not issued in the UK. I think they believe that people will leave them in the car in the glove box.

The code card used to be issued with the car and allowed you to start up if the key code didn't work the instructions for how to use the 4 digit no. should be in the handbook.
The cards are not now issued at the request of the insurers but you should be able to obtain a code from your Fiat Dealer...yes I know thats a long shot but it can be done if they have the will...You will have to provide them with Proof that the car is yours, its chassis and original registration No.
The dealer should then fax fiat uk with the details who will then supply the code...In my case the number had been noted by the supplying dealer on the PDI documents....is that really any more secure than issuing the card to the rightful owner who may just need it some dark snowy night 100 miles from home???
I suggest you get a note of the code and keep it in a safe place just in case...

Just one more little note..if the immobiliser dosn't like your key wait a second or so, remove the key turn it upside down and try again and repeat a few times usually this works and normal service is resumed....

Sorry but the 4 digit code is the radio code not the emergency start up code. That code is 5 digit and you guys don't get them for insurance reasons. All codes for UK cars held by the national security register. Can be obtained through your dealer with some personal details.
