sounds like ur tappets since u said that it "sound's like a diesel".
My mk2 sounds exactly the same, even worse when its cold!
Does the sound go away after you move or roughly 30 seconds?

FIAT!!! It Doesn't Move But It Looks Good!!

yep i have exactly same probolem on my 2001 mk2 sporting my car souns like a diesel when its cold. it goes away a bit when warms up though but can still hear it at idle. think i read that you hear it more when cold as it has hydraulic tappets and you have to wait untill oil has got into them. but they must wear as no way should make that noise from new. doesnt seem to effect the running in my car though. and would love to get it sorted so was quiet.

took the car for a 45 mins run there, ticking noise still there when i got back (although slightly quieter).

Should this tappet thing be something to be concerned with??

The car is still under warranty so it would be good to get it sorted while it still is.

Cheers.

try a nice thick oil! my MK1 dose it when its cold then again when it gets hot as the oil is thin ! its done it from new and aprox 25k l8r nothing has ever gone wrong!

A girl phoned me the other day and said, 'come on over; nobody's home." I went over. Nobody was home.

well this is the reply from the mr vardy's garage when the car went in this morning....

Mechanic quote "it sound like the exhaust fumes hitting of the gasket. Personally, fiats are rubbish and I wouldn't buy one"

brilliant.

Problem no2.....

Whole front headlamp lense covered in condensation - worse on one lamp than other....

Garage's response....

Common fault on fiat punto's, all work that can be done to rectify this has been done with the valve etc at the back of the lamps (3 weeks ago was done). Basically nothing we can do about it.

Funnily enough - I aint seen one other punto (including my sisters) with this "common fault".

Anyone on here suffer from this problem??? Just so I can see how common it is.

cheers.

A Fiat mechanic said that? Definitely report it. If it's an independant, fair enough I guess.

The local Fiat dealership here, Simonstone, is actually proud of them, and, amazingly, they're well-run, fair-priced, and know what they're doing.

no never on any o my 4 fiats had that and never seen one! however have had probs we the dealer!

Take it to Fiat. They have new thicker seals which allegedly stop it happening. There's a rumour that they drill a hole in the unit as well to let air in but I dunno if that's true.

If your car's still under warranty this should definitely be done free of charge, otherwise, it still should really be, if they get all tight ask for a goodwill gesture.

I refuse to take my punto to fiat anymore after they told me my brakepads had months left in them. Two days later on a very long journey they wore out and dug ridges in my discs. No compensation was given but they offered to repair the damage at the normal cost!!

After speaking to the garage i bought the car from, their fiat dealership and logging a call with fiat directly (to which I have still had no reply 3 weeks later), I have admitted defeat in that the garage are not going to change my lights. Their attitude is that its a common fault and by changing the lights would make no difference as there is every chance it is happening to the other set.

I was also told (by the foreman of the fiat dealership) that in no way will the condensation affect the electrics in the car. Fine.

Yesterday i decided to open the back of the headlight and dry inside as the condensation was getting beyond a joke. On opeing the back a huge amount of water came flodding out (about a mug full of water). The connectors to the bulb were soaking, as well as the whole of the inside of the unit.

I noticed that there is a small drilled hole on both headlamps at the side of them and all the wee rubber hose vents at the back of the headlamp all seem to be working ok - not blocked or anything.

I dried the whol lamp out with a hair dryer and sealed the back plate (the one which you remove to replace the bulbs) with silicon. After letting it set for a few hours - took it for a drive in the rain and..........

Back to square one. Condensation built up again - as well as the water in the headlamp.

I am really pissed now.[:(!]

Hi,

If the condensation is that bad, then it will affect the light output. This is a safety issue, ask them to put in writing that the fault will not reduce the safety of the vehicle and that should anything occur as a result of the condensation that Fiat will take responsibility. If they refuse tell them you will speak to the Department of Transport to suggest a recall of affected vehicles as you are concerned it may compromise safety.

I am going to take mine in next week for a service and also for the juddering wipers, dodgy battery which goes flat after 48hours and the same condensation in the lights. It is not even 2 years old yet.

We just bought a new Ulysse and this also has condensation in the front lights. Not that it makes any difference as it shouldn't happen to any car but for a list price of £24K it shouldn't happen.

By the way mine also sounds like a diesel with a dodgy cyclinder in the morning when it's cold. Apparently it is poor oil circulation to the top end, it's not the tappets though as it is a deep thudding. Does make you wonder about how much extra wear it gets. It is a known issue though.

I'll let you know how I get on next week.

Mulge,

Your Fiat dealership are taking the **** a bit. This has been readily fixed on a number of Mk2s and you should mention this. Tell them about the water because it's a bloody fire risk and frankly they should know better.

You know, this is what pisses me off about Fiats. Every car manufacturer has these little problems with their cars but thanks to the shoddy dealers in this country Fiats get a reputation for dodgyness which the cars just don't deserve. Lazy bastards.

Simmonstone, my local lot, are actually quite good thank God, or else I probably wouldn't be considering a mk2 sporting next.

poggy,

you won't belive this mate (in fact - no, you probably will in fact) - but I've had the exact same problems!!!

Diary of problems with car
--------------------------

1 week old - Part of exhaust near manifold side (some sort of gasket ring worn I'm told) needed replaced due to developing a hole round the seal.

Also lot of condensation on passenger side light. Mechanic added extra venting and dried out light whilst also putting vaseline round cover seal.

4 weeks old - Battery needed replaced due to going totally dead after sitting for more than 48 hours over crimbo. Mechanics checked alternator and battery, no problems reported on their monitoring equipment. Left the car with them overnight so they could try and start it in the morning (which they couldnt). They replaced it with a battery from another punto which has sat in their yard for a month which started straight away. Cars been used every day for work etc since this has been done so not been able to test new battery.

Loud tapping noise when idling whilst cold. (mechanic said their was no problem, prob just exhaust gasses hitting off the manifold). Problem still there.

Major condensation on light. Told by dealership that nothing could be done - as they had been instructed by fiat not to do so. Have written confirmation from dealer stating this.

6 weeks old - Opened cover of headlamp for a stream of water to come rushing out (would say approx 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup full). Electrics soaked. Took steps to rectify situation (as have given up on dealer and fiat). Still problem persists.

Also, exhaust now developed another hole in back box.

Oh... nearly forgot - I've also had the juddery windscreen wipers since I bought the car.

At the point of giving up on this car and punting it.

Hi,

They wouldn't change the battery, said that Fiat advice you disconnect if you are leaving it for 48 hours or more. Not much good if you go away and leave it at the airport for a couple of days. I suppose you could carry a tool kit. I actually carry a jumper battery pack just in case now.

Still going to kick the dealer next week.
