Hi,I've put a mk2b gearbox in a grande it fits,and it's lowered the revs,at 70mph it does 3000rpm, so the grande gear box will fit your mk2/2b,but your revs will be about 3500rpm at 70mph,due to different final drive ratio. The grande Punto has a extra vertical bolt on the end gearbox mounting.
 
Thanks for the info Multipete, I probably won't go for it based on your experience as that could potentially lower the fuel economy quite a bit. Will keep looking! Really appreciate the feedback
 
I'm not near the car at the moment but I was test driving it when it happened.

Clutch had been slipping (I expected gear oil) and it was struggling to engage gears at random. Also something had sounded very loose and rattly but I couldn't tell where from. At the end of test run I went to reverse it back into the space and as I drove back there was a huge crunch (like I'd hit something) and it jumped out of gear. Could see a lot of oil had escaped and when re-examining the bell housing there was a hole punched through to the lower front where there hadn't been one before. Expect that was the bit that was rattling about...
