Hello,

My starter motor is on the way out, have had to hit it with a wrench a couple of times to get it going.

Its a Denso with part number C132 63101018.

Would anyone happen to know how many teeth it has? Tried asking a few sellers on ebay and no one was able to answer.

I see on Eurocarparts theres ones with 9 teeth and 8.

Thank you.

I don't know if you're starter is now sorted but a few months back my nephew's 1.2 8V starter was jammed.

When I took it off, the pinion was caked in clutch dust.

I cleaned all the dust off and the starter was fine!

The two bolts holding the starter are on opposite faces. The lower one is on the engine side, the upper one is gearbox side - both are 13mm heads.

Battery cable is 13mm and the relay wire is 10mm.

Brendan, when say lubrication, for a starter, I presume you talking about pencil lead (dry lube) rubbed on the pinion shaft?

i think earlier punto mk1 had different set of teeth
best thing is take old one off and count
this way you can be sure
to be honest on a car thats now getting on in age i would be buying from a breaker a known good s/h one for 25sovs

Thank you for the replies, I have picked up a new one and will compare the teeth when I take the old one out. If it can just be dust build up and a good clean then I'll try that and return the new one as its still boxed up.

Whats a good cleaner to use? Will break cleaner be enough to get rid of the dust without harming anything?

Common sense, best cleaner of the lot. Usually the problem is hard packed lumps of dust. Scraping and brushing gets it out. A little lube can help but use too much and it will end up being counter-productive as it will tend to attract new dust. Just enough so you don't notice that there is any on there, if that makes sense :)

To get the caked on clutch dust cleaned off the starter pinion shaft I used degreaser tin bowl (Fray Bentos pies) with 1/4" degreaser fluid in the tin and a 1" paint brush.

Starter out and on the work bench.

Dip the starter pinion in the tin and give it a good brushing over with degreaser.

Operate the starter to work the pinion a bit.

Wash and operate the starter a few times to get the all the dust out.

If you want, lube as advised above, then refit to the car.
