Hit by uninsured driver

Hi all

There's just been an accident outside my house, an uninsured car has written my neighbors car off but my neighbours car shunted into mine at the front. My bumper and bonnet are screwed, what the likely hood of there being some internal damage to the engine? I've had a drink so can't get into it and give it a test drive

Re: Hit by uninsured driver

I don't think you'll have any engine damage as most of the impact was absorbed by your neighbour's car.

When the scene clears, lift the bonnet and have a look to see if anything has been pushed back onto the engine block. If not, start the car .. and if no 'noises' .. try running it.

I'm not too sure about uninsured drivers .. call your insurance company and ask them. Years ago some insurance companies had a policy of covering you for damage caused by an uninsured driver, but not all. Maybe somebody else on the forum knows.

Speak to your insurance company first .. it's possible that they may write your vehicle off as Cat D .. or more likely Cat C. Unless you're just going to do the repairs yourself ..

Re: Hit by uninsured driver

Possibly you can claim from insurers of car that was shunted into your car. That is usual in normal shunts.

Re: Hit by uninsured driver

The usual would be for you to claim of the car that hit you then they car that hits you claims for the cost of your claim as well as thiers. Itll be worth speaking to you insurance company anyway it varies company to company, remember though any claim regardless of fault gets rated on, so if its a cheap fix it may not be worth claiming.

There was a place you could claim for uninsured drivers but forgot the name

Re: Hit by uninsured driver

I've just ran your registration through 'webuyanycar.com' using a guessed at mileage of 80,000, 2 owners from new and some service history.

The valuation is attached as an image. Yes, it comes as a surprise ...

That valuation is what your car is worth to the motor trade/auction price .. though I would expect that it would actually fetch about 300 at auction.

If you phone your insurance company, ask them for 'advice' rather than report an accident ..

I once phoned my insurance company about damage to my car - and they were going to treat it as a claim and reduce my NCD accordingly.

I ended up fixing the car myself as it was cheaper (and I had the spare parts).

To them, yes. Bear in mind they buy the car to sell on so you won't get market value. Customer of ours has just been offered 2000 for a Range Rover he paid 8000 for a couple of years ago. That said, it's a sack of **** rolling moneypit that i would'nt have if he gave it me!

Re: Hit by uninsured driver

Thanks for the replies guys. Just to update you I went through insurance and the garage has quoted 2300 for parts and labour, needs new bumper, bonnet, headlights, cross panel and radiator (radiator out of shape but not leaking). I'm just waiting on his report to reach the insurance so they can give me a derisory offer.

New questions, would it be worth me getting the car back off them? The guy at the garage said I could either refuse their offer or if the offer is decent see how much they would sell it back to me for?

Cheers

Neil

I am supposing you are asking them to write it off and then you buy the write off? You then need to insure a car that is officially written off?

Hi,
I don't know your car..
but 2300 for a Punto Mk2 is HUGE.. car is probably worth 400 to 800

@judderbar..
it's deemed as "beyond economic repair"

structural damage.. - it gets crushed

Re: Hit by uninsured driver

How much do you reckon it would cost to fix it yourself using secondhand bits? It would depend on how much your insurance would pay out for it - and how much you could buy it back for (scrap value, I would imagine..).

If the insurance company writes the vehicle off and you decide to buy it back and repair it, that shouldn't be a problem. Your car will be a 'Category C'

To put the car back on the road and re-insure it, you have to get a vehicle inspection done. Your local council MOT place will do this for you and supply you with the written report. It's just to say the vehicle is fit for the road, really.

Five years ago my wife bought a category C Saab. The rear offside panel had been repaired and repainted, that's all. A 'Cat C' car is no big problem, though when declared, the vehicle has a value of one-third less than the current market value.

Category D - at the bottom of the group - can include something like a broken electric mirror. Don't ask me how a car can be written off because of a broken wing mirror, I haven't figured it out myself.

Here's the Insurance categories:
